Turbo Sizing Question

I need some sizing info. A buddy of mine is redoing his single turbo. Here is the situation. He has a HKS cast divided manifold, with a T4 60-1 P trim, .81 hotside turbo that has taken a crap on him.

He is going to replace this turbo but would like to get more power. Approximately 400RWHP at 15PSI or so. Keeping in mind that he will be reusing the manifold, can you tell me what size turbo he should be looking for? and how much it will cost?

Thanks

nyt nows his ****!

Anyhow my turbo Turbonetics T04B 60-1 .96A/R .70 trim. 4"inlet 3"out made 408.8rwhp at 15psi.

So you should do fine with these. (The turbonetics 62-1 will provide a little more power)

(Some people call my turbo a T04S)

Both responses are correct, he should be able to do 400 whp with the 60-1with correct supporting mods. I'd recommend a rebuild and go with a divided turbine housing (.81 is a non divided valute if its a garrett based turbine). Go with a .84 for quick spool, a 1.00 for great spool and little more top end, or 1.15 for slower spool and even more top end (personally I'd go for the 1.00) all P-Trim.

If your buddy has a street port and full exhaust - either a 1.00 or a 0.96 turbine housing (if divided or undivided to match his manifold)

if your buddy has stock ports, or will retain a cat.... keep the turbine at 0.84 or 0.81 (again, depending on if your manifold is divided or not)

If he has the port and full exhaust + a 1.00 sized housing, 400 rwhp at 15 psi should be attainable.

Yah, this is pretty much where I am at as well. He had a stock ported reman before, and the turbo was okay for that, but he has put a nice size street port on the new engine, so I am thinking he should take advantage of porting with a 1.00 (div) manifold. He is going to be paying $500 for the rebuild, new hotside, and vband from cheapturbo.com . Is this a fair price for the rebuild, or should he just buy new? and if so from who?

The .81 will not make 400@15psi, NO WAY, I have one here, the same set-up, HKS cast, at 15psi it's~330, you need the 1.0 ar for 400.(that's a period). Care to challenge this notion? I have taken the .81 up to 28psi, 400@15 Nope. The one he had is a fast spoolin SOB, but not a 400rwhp turbo. The 1.0 is a totally different story, with many guys posting the power he seeks. Cheap Turbo lists a TO4S Q trim(add100.00), I'd be very interested in that, anyone ever see a Q trim TO4S? Carl

I agree there's no way he will see 400rwhp@15 psi, not with .81 anyways. Make sure he upgrades the hotside to something more appropriate. I would also go with the .96 or 1.0 a/r.

I dunno, I was at 380 SAE at 15psi with a .70 on a tired motor. But the compressor was a T-66. ...still bigger than a GT35/40 with a 1.06 since its on a T-3 footprint.
