turbo selection for cosmo engine????
turbo selection for cosmo engine????
Okay so I just picked up a Cosmo engine and am leaving it with stock porting.
It's running the stock twins right now as non sequential and it's time for a turbo upgrade.
It has to be streetable...somewhat..
It can't have any insane amounts of lag. Looking to make only about 360-400hp.
I'll be running everything on a Microtech LTx-8....
The fuel system and everything else is being addressed so I don't think I need to be reminded of that . I have a large assortment of injectors to swap when I start dynoing.
I just need some help with turbo selection since I am not to knowledgable about them.
If anyone can through some suggestions or links out there that would be great.
Thanx.................

Okay after more research I am thinking more and more that the almighty 60-1 would be my best choice. Directfreak is running a Cosmo engine in his 1st gen GSL-se and after seeing the dyno runs and hearing from him what his turbo specs are I think it would be a good choice. He is running a slightly larger turbo then a 60-1 but he is also making about 120whp more than I care to snap a driveline on.......LOL
If anyone else has any other suggestions aside from the 60-1 jump in here with some info......
Peace

my friend has a modified T51R-SPL from hks. the compressor wheel has been changed to one of billet aluminum and the compressor housing is a bit smaller, im not sure of the exact size. spool up is decent we started to see 12psi/boost as early as 3.5k and peaks at 28psi at around 5.5-6k he makes about 580hp and 400ish torque on C16. on 93 it puts out around 510hp and 350tq on 21psi. the sound from this turbo at idle reminds me of a centrifugal supercharger because of the aluminum compressor. when spooling up its sounds like a high pitched(turbo) and hollow(turbo intake) sound.
just my 2cents

I think i will end up going with the 60-1 only because of cost at this point.
The GT turbos are great but are still out of my budget.
I think I will aim for getting the car running strong first then putting my contacts to use and try to get a turbo from a product sponsor......That would be great.....LOL.
yeah bal bearings are great but it's not in my budget.
I'm not rushing to get everything done overnight or anything like that. So in a couple months when I'm ready to buy the turbo I'll buy better if I can afford better.
LOL......that's how it always works out with me.

anyone have any more suggestions or prices for some turbos out there???
I know turbos are expensive but I have ever only seen kits.
The turbo setup I have was very cheap from a buddy of mine. But it's going to be to small for the breathing of the Cosmo engine.
Any links or price quotes for a turbo without a kit??????

I personally would go with the Apexi RX-6 ball-bearing. It has a really quick spool time.

I got the microtech and motor for under 1500 bux.
I picked up my mazdaspeed manifold, T4 garret, and dual hks mufflers with full stainless piping and Y-pipe for $400.
I would like to keep my luck of the budget buys going.
I cannot spend over $800 on a turbo right now. Used would be fine since I have somewhere to get them rebuilt!!!
Thanx for your input so far guys...........
Peace
Cosmo ports are huge!! but restrictive at exhaust (if I'm correct.. Its similar to 20b ports). Take out the sleeves in the exhaust ports and you'll increase the exhaust flow and spin the crap out of any turbos you put on.

Take a look at the AF61R from DaVinci. It easily makes the power your looking for and supposedly has great spool (similar to a GT35R I would say). Its $750 if you order before October 1. I will definitely be looking at this turbo when I upgrade.

As herblenny mentioned, your stock exhaust ports are going to be a little restrictive. Don't be tempted into getting a huge turbo (and it doesn't sound like you will), because it potentially could spool a little slower on the stock RE than on a stock 13b. HOWEVER, if you eventually go down the road of taking out the sleeves as mentioned (or swapping parts from an FD), then you open up your exhaust and can spool those nice big turbos.
In my research on turbos for my RE, I finally decided the 60-1 was probably just about right -- it sounds like your goals and setup will be very similar to mine.
http://www.cheapturbo.com is pretty reasonable and have a decent selection. Their base price for a TO4s (60-1) is $819. There are many others and I'm sure a lot will turn up w/ searches on this forum.

yeah I am very aware of the exhaust ports.
That will be addressed with some porting though. So it won't be a worry.
The turbo looks nice. The AF61....
hmm...now the choices are opening up and I'm getting more indecisive.
