Turbo Filter?

Just a question here, and it may be a very stupid one, but still a question.

Is there anyway to make a metal mesh filter for the hotside of the turbo. i mean, to protect the hotside of the turbo from an apex seal?

is this feasable? has this been discussed before?

KaiThanx!

It would kill your power and turbine efficiency but could be done.

really? you couldnt make it freeflowing enough?

i'm not really talking about anything dense here, just something that will catch debris if the unspeakable were to happen.

when apex seals go, how much debris is usually thrown into the turbo?

hahaha, thats funny, actually i was in a discussion about this a little over a month ago, worked out some designs that really wouldnt effect the turbine efficiency and could protect from a apex seal failure

i mean, i'd be afraid of buying a really really nice single turbo and going thru the trouble(and expense) of upgrading just to have an apex seal destroy it.

what were your conclusions Jspec?

1) Sure you could do it, but it would hurt flow no matter how you look at it

2) You're not exactly preventing much real damage anyways. Once you've popped a seal, you've done 3X the amount of damage to the inside of the engine, a fresh wheel and balancing or even a new CHRA is mild in cost comparison

3) It would have to withstand so much heat and pressure its not funny. Otherwise this mesh/filter/whatever would chew up the turbo even worse then a chunk of seal

4) You can pop an engine and do extremely minimal damage to the turbine. I've done this twice and never replaced anythign on the turbo after those occasions.

5) If you're worried about an apex seal wrecking your turbo, single turbo RX-7's aren't for you. Spending dough and breaking **** is half of the fun.

Not many comments because it's kind of a silly idea

You'd have to get a material that can withstand 2000+ degree EGTs, while not causing an exhaust leak.

If you're that worried about breaking an apex seal, look into water/methanol injection.

i was just reading another thread about having to rebuild a turbo and and this idea popped in my head.

I dont have to worry about turbos, my car is NA. i also dont have to worry about apex seals, i got an ls1.

i did a search and nothing came up, so i posed the question.

i was/still am, aware of how much debris gets thrown into the turbo hotside. also another reason why this could be considered a silly question. Sounds like it isnt a major concern considering classicauto has popped twice and didnt need to replace anything.

thanks for the information guys. i was really hoping i'd get an answer from someone like the above two posters
