Which turbo?

I'm looking to make 400-450whp on my streetported 13b. Im stuck on which turbo to go with. Im torn between the garrett t04r, precision 6266, hx50, or a gt42r. I know all of these can get me there but im just looking for what you guys think or any experiences anyones had with these turbos

there are a lot of turbo options available. in an attempt to simplify a bit i like to think of them as small, medium and large.

sizing should be thought of as relative rather than objective as the "small" category can make big hp compared to the OE setup on the FD.

small would be GT35, PT62, BW S300 62.

these turbos fit your hp objectives perfectly. BTW, make no mistake here, your RX7 can fly with any of them if properly tuned and set up.

average compressor area (see my sticky thread "Turbo Comparisons") is around 6.4 square inches. average output high 60 pounds per minute. compact at only 8.58 inches in length, 16 pounds

medium turbos are the TO4r, PT67, BW S300 63, GT500, TO4Z

average compressor area 7 sq inches... average max output high 70 pounds per minute. 9.2 length, around 22 pounds. hp around 500-550 max

Large turbos

GT4294r, BW EFR 91, anything on the list w 8 sq inches and above

average output 80 pounds per minute or more. average hp 600+. these turbos are bulky, heavy, large. 9.8+ inches length, 30 pounds

given your hp objectives look at the 6.3- 6.4 average compressor area.

there are some very good values such as the Garrett GT35 compressor wheel mounted to a journal bearing P trim turbine wheel and the BW S300 62. the upper end of this "small" category both output and price wise would be the GTX3582r.

from your list, only the PT62 fits your power goals. the TO4r is a medium range turbo and the HX50 and GT4294r are in the large category.

the list above is by no means complete of course and others are welcome to comment. i do suggest you visit my Turbo Comparisons thread for additional info.

good luck

Thanks for the awesome response. The only other thing i should have mentioned is im looking to make 400 on around 18 psi can the pt62 do that or is something like the t04r a better choice.

here's a typical small size compressor map...

your 400 objective requires 53 pounds per minute of air.

18 psi is 2.2 pressure ratios.

as you can see the turbo can easily do this providing you can drive it to that point on the map.

there are numerous people on the board that should be able to offer and opinion based on experience.

there are many factors that influence this potential outcome.
