ssautochrome manifolds

i hear people talkin' **** about them all the time, but i used one on my turbo halfie and beat the **** out of it. it did just fine.

bolt holes for the turbo didn't line up very well, but easy fix. they've started using thick flanges now too.

anyway, has anyone actually cracked one? lemme see some pics.

I think the old ones were shitty, but they have been using much thicker walled tubing and flanges like you mentioned, so they should hold up pretty well. Can't really beat the price unless you're making one yourself...

actually, i used the old one. no problems, although i do like how the flanges are thicker now.

you know how forums are...one guy has a problem with something one time and EVERYONE and their grandma jumps in and trashes it...

Guitar,

I have been tracking all of the members who claim to have them on there cars, and have actually seen one of the turbos, and wastegates, the wastgate was warped and jammed partially open, but the turbine has not been installed (friends honda) Have you noticed (besides flanges) any problems with the components you bought?

i wouldn't touch the turbos or wastegates with a 10 foot pole, but the manifolds i've seen and used have all been just fine.

Thumbs down show a photo of one that hasn't been modified after it was bought

That thing had been cut and rewelded for some reason, you can see where it cracked above the new weld, thats what happens when someone who isn't a welder trys to weld, and F's up.

showing something that has been modified after purchase and then broken < ...................... ......deleted to avoid arguments....................................... IMO.

being that there are several members here on the forum who make a living (or extra cash) off of selling brand name parts here on the forum, I am sure that these cheaper manifolds are a thorn in their sides that cuts into their profit margin, and any attempt to discount, or marginalize any product by any of these individuals is simple propoganda that they use to further their own sales agenda's

just my opinion

So now how do you figure it wasn't the original weld?! Either way, as you said, it broke ABOVE the weld, so I don't see how it had anything to do with the weld itself. If it was the weld, it would have broke at the weld.

After taking a closer look, the welds around the merge collector arn't consistent with the others. However, the welds around the turbo flange and the header flange are consistent.

you see this funny thing happens when u weld things get hot really hot. when the manufacturer gets done fabbing the manifold they do this nice thing called heat tempuring. this process strengthens the part. when u weld on it the heat tempure go away and usually crystalizes the metal there for breaks very easily. Sound like someones pissed there ragin on someones welds.

Dude, look at the weld on the header flange. The one where the middle arrow goes to. They both look like ***, and are consistent. I really don't think it was cut and re welded. Besides, this isn't the only picture of their manifolds cracking. Are you going to tell me that all the cracked manifolds have been cut and re welded?!

Funny how someone asks for proof of them cracking, one is given, then everyone swears it was re welded and crap.

nah im jus saying it looks like when someone got the manifold it looked weak and they tried to re weld it. that bead is ontop of another on the turbo flange.

Looking at many of the products from this company, it wouldn't surprise me if they was the ones that tried to re weld it.

Edit:

Alex, the area you are pointing to in the bottom of the photo is at the junction of the flange, and the pipes, on the inside of the pipe, that is not where its welded, its welded on the outside where the large lump of **** goes around touching the flange, as you can see if you are a certified welder(or have ever welded at all) it has 0 penetration, and is lumped up on the outside. In all of there ads, and all of the photos I have never seen any of the welds look like that, not to mention it is totaly out of character when compared to the rest of the welds that are shown there in those photos, its not even tigged like the rest, it looks like a bad mig weld.

Yes I know there isn't a weld along the inside. I pointed there to show the distance between where the weld would be found on the outside, and where the pipe cracked. Anywho, the welds along the merge collector differ from the rest, yet the "lump of ****" is also found on the welds where the piping meets the header flange. Look at the arrow in the center.

As far as the pictures not matching the manifold, that has been the case with alot of people. If you search around, you'll see that people have received products that look NOTHING like the pictures from this company. They probably made a nice shiny manifold, used it for the picture, and shipped people a POS. I think they even state in their ads that the actual product may differ from the picture shown. Not totally sure about that though. I don't feel like pulling up one of their ads to find out.

Alex,

I am not argueing the fact that there quality control sucks! Search back a bit, I am the guy that dissasembled one of their wasegates, and put it on a lathe with a dial indicator when it froze up on my friend!

But I honestly think that many people have gone overboard on the whole thing, with that last photo being a prime example. if you look at the photo, you can see where the flange was rotated, and does not even match up with the pipeing, if you eyeball the turbos compressor houseing you will see that there is no way it could fit in there if it were allighned properly. hence my comments about somebody cutting and re-welding it. this is a common occurance when people put a bigger turbine on than what the mani was originally speced out for.

then the cracking above the weld at the flange indicates fatigue from a weld that was not executed properly. if any of the original welds were going to fail, it would be the ones at the cyclinder head flange, as the whole mainfold acts as a lever with the turbo being the weight or force, and the weld at the cylynder head being the fulcrum, however there are no cracks in that area.

1. instead it chose to crack in a location where it was being pulled straight down,
2. it should have cracked at the head but didn't,
3. large lumpy welds around the crack location,
4. that do not match the other tig welds,
5. a totaly missaligned flange and pipe junction with a compressor that could not fit if it were properly alligned

= somebody cut and re-welded poorly, hence not a good example to use for this discussion.

I have seen many stainless manifolds crack one of the reasons all of my homemade mani's are mild steel, not flashy, but never had one crack yet.

I just hink that if they are as bad as some of the members claim, then they should be able to provide, proof in the format of one that has not been modified.

It looks as if they cut off the flange that came with the manifold and rewelded on another one(larger turbo), whoever bought the manifold that is. The weld above the collector, which looks like it was cleaned up a bit and deburred looks totally different then the crap weld job on the bottom where it broke. I really doubt their quality control is that shitty that they completely "forget" to clean up the welds near the flange. Looks like another case of honda boy performance welding... albeit it broke next to the weld and the weld itself didnt crack. Either way that sucks, comparing a b series manifold to a 13b manifold, apples and oranges.

This is the statement of the year. Show me one that hasn't needed some modification to actually fit. Think what you want. They are **** manifolds period I speak from the experience of actually making manifolds. Funny how you guys want knowledgeable peoples opinion but when given it must be to help their secret cause. I personally could care less what goes on your car, I know for a fact what wont go on mine.
