size -an 3, 4, or 6 for turbo lines?
hi everyone,
Im in the middle of a build but not sure what -an i should go with 3,4,6,10 for return and drain lines. also what -an should i go for with fuel system. im looking for 500whp+ so i dont want any worries.

-6 here No restrictor for a non ball bearing( Ball bearings yes) I had 2 turbos burn down due to a "Big Name" shop( from the forums) telling me to run a restrictor. both turbos died from lack of lube. he was garaunteeing himself rebuilds

Too add to the OP's question,.. What about water lines for Garrett turbos? What size lines are people running? Do you even run the water lines or just the oil? I have seen and heard both. Curious to the general opinion.

I have had smoking problems with no restrictor. I put one in and I still have some smoke but no where near what it used to be.

The local turbo shop I now go to inspected it and asked what size line I used. I brought it in and showed them ..They just shook their heads. Also being a mechanic for 13 years I have seen a few bearing/bushing failures from lack of lube. The entire center cartridge bore was wasted both times from heat warpage and bushings being spun.
I would have to search thru old records for milage. Probably about 1 year daily driving on each. 1 turbo in Hawaii and 1 in NC.

The proper size for the feed line would be 3an for a ball bearing turbo and 4an for a journal bearing.
As for the return line, 10an will for the ball bearing turbos. The journal bearings should have a 12an. Good rule of thumb for return lines is that bigger is always better...
Restrictors can vary on the size of the turbos inner capacity to hold oil and the "port size" of the inlet and outlet. Typically you'll want a .030" for ball bearing and .060" - .125" for journal bearings. Another good idea is to pay attention to your oil pumps and oil modifications. Having a crushed or aftermarket oil pressure regulator increases oil pressure obviously so that should be taken into consideration...

We run -4 feed -10 drain on all our setups. No issues. Garrett recommends no less than .5" for your drain. Garrett CHRA's are internally restricted but if it is still an issue we recommend .060 to .070. I wouldn't recommend restricting a non BB unit. I've seen more than one burn up.

Oh and I use -4 in and -12 out. That is 1/4" and 3/4" for non-aircraft types. (put the 4 over 16 for sizing in inches).
Notice that you can modify a TII drain with its stainless bellows to work on a 3rd gen.

Thanks guys! This was all very informative; however, I am running a GT35R an cant seem to find the right site that has everything needed. i need lines water and oil as well as all the fittings. also a complete fuel system.

Go to your local hardware/plumbing store and get a 1/16" fitting that threads into your CHRA. Make sure that the flare matches your oil feed line you're using... There will be a difference.
