Car runs.. woo hoo..

Trying to figure out how to convert HD videos to mpeg and upload them to the forum.. Hmmm.
Not tech savvy..

But the car fired up on the third try, only cause we had the wrong map to start with. But it idled fine right off the gate. Startup was insane, no throttle, right foot on the clutch and turn the key. Fires right up and settles into the idle. I'm fuggin stoked.. Thanks guys for all the looks, replies and comments..

Looking forward to seeing you guys at the Tail of the Dragon..

Yes I do. It leaks at the vband. I bought two vbands and didn't notice they were different.
Can't explain it good, but one has a v shape and the other a u shape. So the u shaped one
isn't squeezing the exhaust tight enough together. Lots of little things to fix and install.

Brake kit...... huh... i wish. not purchased yet.

Took it for its maiden drive today. Went to the gas station, and drove it around the block a little.. NO BRAKES.. Damn the things we do for pleasure. Have to bleed the brakes.

Tomorrow, insurance, tags, inspection, alignment... Car sounds great. Got more videos, downloading now..

"I want you to post your informative air flow vs spool vs turbo size and how much it will make on a rotary.

Post the numbers for the borg warner S475, 75mm, 83mm exhaust wheel."

HTH re the above PM...

the S475 is a monster turbo.

to give you a relative comparison here's part of the method i use to size turbos...

turbo comparison

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

exducer inducer trim GT say what?

as i initially approached understanding turbos things became more, not less, confusing... some referenced turbos by inducer size, some by exducer. of course they reverse when you are talking turbine wheel V compressor.

i felt there needed to be a better way of comparing turbos.

as you may know all wheels have a minor diameter size and a major diameter. they are often in inches or millimeters. i wanted something simple to help me with sizing them.

i settled on the following:

take the minor diameter and solve for the area.
take the major diameter and solve for the area.
add together, divide by two.

you now have the average area of the wheel.

do it for the compressor (coldside/intake) , do it for the turbine (hotside/exhaust).

you now have two understandable numbers that help a great deal when you seek to compare turbos. needless to say there is a major correlation between area and airflow.

the cold side area determines the airflow potential, the hotside must deliver the power to actualise the potential.

hot area V cold area is especially valuable w the rotary. the rotary places a premium on large hot V cold wheel relationships. you want something approaching 1 to 1 areawise.

here's my list in square inches:...............cold.......................h ot....................relationship

T51R Spl............................................... ......... 9.92..................... 7.194.................... 73

the S475 also comes w a smaller hotside... 74.3 X 83 MM which is 7.593 sq inches.

as you can see amongst a long list of turbos the S475 is very close to the largest.

Flow wise... the S475 makes 96 pounds per minute ( 1389 CFM). that's good for approx 723 rotary rwhp (Rrwhp).

723 Rrwhp requires 6730 CC/Min on gasoline. (given: will run motor at 10.0 AFR at 85% duty cycle... i am not suggesting this AFR, just that it gives you a small amount of latitude if needed).

consider, also, re a very large turbo that you may have a problem finding enough wastegate capacity so as to run at lower boost levels...

further, IMO, anything materially over 600 rwhp requires a number of internal engine mods to live for much longer than a quarter mile.

AI will of course need to be on board.

i am in process of redoing my turbo system, transmission (Tremec T56 6 speed) to end up w what i think is the ultimate practical FD. i think the targets should be 400 rwhp SAE at 5500, 500 at 20 psi and 600 max. we all have differing objectives but i feel my objectives stop short of the crazy stuff. i will get 21 mpg highway, have an engine that will last a number of years and i expect to run over 200 at the Texas Standing Mile.

for people wanting more than 600 i simply ask the question, "have you driven a true 500 rwhp FD?"

this is NOT to knock people wanting more. there is nothing wrong w that. it is written to add a dash of sobriety and perhaps rationality to the hp chase. utility and cost eventually catch up to the hp line.

my apologies for the rant and good luck w your project.
