RX6 smoke on startup?
I was wondering if anyone else with RX6's get a nice fair-sized puff of blue smoke when you first start the car? I've only had the turbo for about 3 months, but I'm getting quite a bit of smoke during first couple seconds of startup and then it clears away. Never any smoke while boosting or at any other time. I heard RX6's are known for this, but was just curious if you guys are experiencing it too.
Thanks
Thanks

i get that almost every morning. huge puff of smoke right... last maybe 5-10 seconds. i got the pettit resonated midpipe with the gt spec exhaust. what exhaust setup do you have? maybe it makes a difference. after the first5-10 seconds it goes away and i usually dont see it again for the rest of the day. i park my car inside a garage and i live in florida.

I have a bonez high-flow and PFS exhaust. I get a cloud about the size of the car, which dissipates within 5 or 10 seconds. Again, no smoke at all while driving. But it'll do that every time I start the car, so long as it's sat for at least an hour or two. So is that a symptom of ball bearing turbos in general or just RX6's? I've always been self-conscious of blue smoke.....
It pretty much completely started after a day at the track, which is what got me concerned. But absolutely nothing happened that day which should have caused it...checked the PFC maxes after every run and there was no overboost (0.70bar max each time), no overheating, etc.
Thanks for the reply

i am going to agree with tailhappy here that if my car sits for a while i will again get a huge cloud of smoke out the muffler. like if i am at work and i leave for lunch then i dont really get a cloud at all, but if i dont go to lunch and go home then i get the huge cloud again.

I get a puff of oil smoke when I start mine in the morning with the RX6. I think it has done that since I put it in. It doesn't smoke otherwise. I am glad to see this thread, as I thought it might be the engine.

I've never ever heard of this happening nor experienced this on my car which begs the question what exactly is that puff of smoke. I have a midpipe and also a racing beat cat back exhaust and have never seen such a thing before

This is weird. I would especially expect smoke from those with midpipes. However, I'm ecstatic to see that others are seeing similar symptoms. I was afraid it might be an indication of problems.
Here's what initially occurred to me: ever since I had it installed, I've heard the famed Curly "whoop whoop whoop" when I let off under boost. I've checked and rechecked my blow off valve and it seems to work properly, so I finally just quit worrying about it. So for those with and without the smoke, do you get that sound?
Thanks a bunch for the replies!

what sound??? do you mean from the engine or from the exhaust? i have a midpipe and there is alot of smoke in the morning. later in the day not so bad. i think its just condensation and unburnt fuel from the last time i started the car. but i have no idea what you mean by a whoop whoop whoop sound...

The turbo sounds just like Curley from the Three Stooges, or like a Wookie. It's apparently the sonic waves as the pressure has no place to go when you snap the throttle shut, but like I say, the BOV seems to work properly. There were so many new noises from the new turbo and engine, that I finally decided i was just being too paranoid.

compressor surge, or possibly BOV fluttering. What BOV do you have? Have you tried to loosen it to stop the "whoop, whoop, whoop" Curly sound?
Also, do you only get whoop, whoop, whoop, when you ease out of the throttle, or even when you snap off it?

I was told by a reputable mechanic (Vince at MazCare) that a small puff of blue smoke that quickly clears is normal on any rotary with a properly functioning oil injection system. I wouldn't worry about it.

Weird, my last post never showed up.....
Anyway, I hear both compressor surge, and BOV fluttering. I was playing with it today, and I think the compressor surge is when under boost when you let off abruptly, but not all the way. Which is what I tend to do when shifting. I rarely snap the throttle completely shut.
I have a TurboXS Type-S BOV, and it's adjusted to be as loose as it can be (in other words, no washers). It seems to whoosh like it should, but it also makes the fluttering noise sometimes. That's not bad is it? I'm only running about 12psi right now, so it should be able to handle that.
And the amount of smoke I get isn't just a little puff. It dissipates into a cloud about the size of the car, I noticed one day when the wind was blowing right. Again, only first thing in the morning, and when I leave work at lunch and at the end of the day. Don't notice anything when coming back from lunch.
I have 4 months and 5000 miles on both the turbo and the engine. Nearly 1000 of them are on the track. I'm always very meticulous about oil changes and proper warm-up and cool-down of the turbo, so I was surprised to see this happen so quickly.
On a side note, how long should it be necessary to cool down the turbo after a quick full boost, like through 1st and 2nd? 3 or 4 minutes of easy driving? Wasn't sure how much heat would even build up in that amount of time.
Thanks again for the responses. At first I doubted if this post would even get any attention. Great forum!

Something occurred to me on the way home yesterday. Some of you have RX6s that smoke and some don't. Started wondering if the key was the wear and tear of track events. I know max goes regularly, and I now have a couple events on this turbo, how about you others?

Lol, yeah, we're fortunately to have a couple nice tracks fairly near us. I kinda feel the same way about the strip.
Oh well, shot that theory down.......
