Question Profec a vs haltec for boost contol

It was a toss up where this post should be..
I have a Profec a, it gave me a nice boost curve with the stock Ht18s turbo on my TII, I now have full T04 with haltech, I have started using the profec A on the to4 setup, and with the haltech I have datalogged it, the fuzzy logic is pretty fuzzy, the boost will be even and straight for 3 or 4 straight runs, then every odd one it will be completly out to lunch, with a hunt in the datalog, instead of its usual 8 psi, it will go to 12 then down to 8 then back to 10 and you can feel it when it does it, 2psi back and forth with a T04e is a fair bit of power, with the profec turned off, boost is a flat 8 psi across the board all the time..
So, should I plumb in a solenoid and run with the haltech controlling the boost or just try gving the profec a few more "learn modes". I have thought about hooking up the profec in the Internal wastegate fashion as it seem to work moderatly ok with that, although I do remember getting a wierd 17 psi spike once with it then as well.. Or is the Profec A just an expensive pile of crap?? Max

Yep, the Profec A is an expensive piece o' crap .

The Haltech's boost control is a total afterthought - it's really tricky to use and is very basic.

If you want simple, easy to use boost control that's reasonably priced get a Profec B. They work great, give excellent control, and run around $300 or so.

If you want/need lots of features (gear based boost control, RPM based boost control, overboost settings) get an Apexi AVC-R. It does *everything*, and it's about $450 or so.

Blitz also makes some damn fine boost controllers, but they just changed their lineup with a bunch of new stuff and there's really no first-hand experiences with them yet. HKS makes a good product, but all their stuff is VERY pricey and some of it is a real pain to use.

Anyhow, long story short, don't waste your time with the Haltech boost controller. Even die-hard "Haltech is God" guys have tried it and ditched it.

The haltech supplied solenoid is the issue, not the Haltech itself. I tried with the factory solenoid and it would wig out above 17psi.

HITman got me another solenoid and we plumbed it up and it gives me rock steady boost all the way to 28psi

The solenoid we use now is very very similar to the ones used by Apexi and HKS etc for their controllers. 3 big ports coming out of it, very solid little unit, about the size of 2 match boxes together. Will try and get pics....

Thats good to know I was given a mitsubishi factory boost solenoid to give it a try with, If that one is crap in your guys's experience, I won't even try it.. The Profec seemed to work with my old setup, but with a turbo this large, I just don't trust it that much now..Max

Gidday,
hmm i'm curious to see this solenoid I was going to hook up my standard solenoid to the haltech soon, but wasn't sure if it would be worthwhile. How much would it set me back?
Mat.
