Oil temps 275+ on boost

I just finished with my single build and i was rompin on it and the oil temps will rise drastically when on boost. At cruise they stay around 220F but as soon as i get on it the raise like crazy. The water temp is normal and the oil pressure is good.
I have an earls 9 row oil cooler but it is behind the fmic and in front of the koyo rad. I would think there should be sufficient air flow behind the ic...There really isn't anywhere else to mount the oil cooler because the original side mount area now has ic piping. any ideas?

I would diffently move your oil cooler. My oil temp is 70-90C at cruising and around 100-110C WOT. It makes a big difference where you oil cooler is located.

Yes, or perhaps put a dedicated fan on the cooler. 2nd gens come with the cooler where you have yours, and with fmic's they usually heat up too, though not as hot as yours. I got pretty nervous when my oil temps went above about 230, personally.

Are you sure you have enough oil? Are you running some stupid high egt's or something? Normally oil temp creeps up, just like coolant temp. As you idle or cruise around town, it stays fairly low, below 200. As you hit the highway and get the rpm's up consistently in the midrange, they climb slowly. Even if you beat the car, they shouldnt skyrocket that way.

I have plenty of oil, and the oil pressure is kinda high. cruise it's around 40-60psi. wot the stock guage is burried and the aftermarket one is also (100psi)
I picked up a new oil cooler 3x the size and a fan. I'll mount this tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks

If your gauge is functioning properly, def. get it addressed. Your stationary gear bearings will thank you for it.

i can do that. i take it that it's better to pull than push...just like most radiators
i'll mount it this weekend and post my results. weather looks crappy so it'll give me an excuse to stay in the garage all day...again

I run a single 25 row Earl's cooler, a puller fan, remote oil filter, my capacity is near 7 quarts. I never see that quick or that much of an increase on my Cyberdynne temperature gauge with the sensor mounted in the stock oil filter pedestal. Where is your aftermarket sensor?

oil cooler is way too small. 2 9-rows are even too small, IMO.

Sounds like a few problems. Too small an oil cooler, bad placement of the oil cooler, and too thick of oil. The 20w50 will not cool as well as a 10w30. You really don't need the 20w50 if you have a high pressure oil regulator. Also, having the oil cooler behind the intercooler means all the hot air from the intercooler gets transferred to the oil cooler, and we know that oil doesn't transfer heat as well as water, one reason why your water temps are not affected too much, but the oil temps are.

I hope you don't start having warm/hot start issues. When oil temps are that high, it will cause the corner seal springs to loose their spring tension, and your low RPM compression will drop. Once the springs have annealed (softened) enough to the point that your engine only creates 55-60psi of compression, you will have a HELL of a time trying to start the car (hot or cold). I had this happen on one motor, which was caused by poor cooling of the engine.

OK, i used to have a similar problem on my old FC. Water temps were awesome, but oil temps got high! Then problem ended up being that i had a slight wastegate leak and thus i was always "boosting" and heating up the oil. Make SURE you have no wastegate leaks. The other things you can do:

Relocate oil cooler
Run bigger oil cooler (s)
Properly duct air (make sure none is "leaking" by)
Run a fan on it that is temperature controlled.

Hope that helps a little.
