*gawd I hope no newbie tries to "powershift" without using the clutch...lol...

i ran. broke my trans on the first run. popped out of first gear. got two more runs. it stayed in gear ran 12.03 @ 117.6, 1.75 60 FT and 12.4 @ 115 1.97 60 FT . got three more runs but couldn't go in first gear.... eventually tried starting in 2nd gear. got a 2.39 60 FT and 14.58 @ 105mph. i was the last rx7 in the rx7 vs supra eliminations..... oh well next year. i need a cage, tuning, more boost, stronger tranny!!!!
Sorry to hear that Vosko.
So much for being a street machine. L
This is why I hate drag racing-too expensive!. Run the setup you run on the street..no race gas, no Drag radials, no killer clutches, and with a full interior. Screw the time, your mph says it all. Kinda like nocab, ran a nice mph on street tires. So he didn’t pull the best time but he knows the car’s capable. Let’s face it, our car’s powerband w/single turbo setups leaves us little room for traction (if any). Therefore, most of my street races have been on a roll or strict highway runs (otherwise I’d crash into a parked car or a pole trying to slam gears from a dead stop). Also driver skill plays a huge roll on the ¼ mile but a lot of these drivers can’t run an autoX to save their lives (and this goes in reverse as well). However, roadracing (and autoX) teaches driver and car control regardless of power and this is more applicable to street driving. This includes driving the car closer to it’s performance envelope which is why we chose them and built them up for- isn’t it?
Next time someone asks you what ¼ you ran, show them a dyno sheet .
-Ed
PS: If it sounds like I’m inexperienced or hate the ¼ mile well I’ll leave you with this:
My previous car was an 87 GN which I ran a best of 10.66 @ 129.5 mph. However, it took a couple of years (and a lot of $$) before I learned that 20-30hrs of labor for 3-6 runs @10-11sec apiece (about 1minute) wasn’t worth it. There are better ways to enjoy your car.

my car will not be only drag racing. i plan on going to road course events again next year. i went to mads in february with my TII and had a great time. i haven't autox'd yet....... i know how to take turns... i just want to have some fun with my car without breaking expensive driveline parts.... i guess i can dream!
you can still break driveline parts on the street. its not as likely but it can and will happen. i think i just need to partner with turbovr6 and finish his drag 1st gen.... that should be more than enough fun for me

I broke my diff on the street, so its not only drag racing that does it. I didn't even launch. I started easy in 1st gear from a light and Vosko was next to me. Of course he HAD to try and race me. So naturally I wasn't going to let him get ahead. I floored it and then banged it into 2nd and boom went the rear. This was on street tires. In my opinion the stock rear is a piece of junk.

powershifting will always be faster the conventional shifting. You have to be quick so you don't over rev to much.
If your skeptical about it you should do a datalog and see how much time between shifts it takes for granny shifting and powershifting. Plus you stay at your sweet spot in the powerband rather then fall out of it.
For a fast shifter it usually takes .1~.2 tenths for a powershift And about .4~.6 for granny.
SO yes it will help 1/4 times tremendously

Chronos,
To get a sense of how powershifting works, you can practice it under partial throttle...put your right foot 1/4 of the way to the floor, then bounce the clutch with your left foot ... you can even do this without shifting gears to "see/hear" how minimal the overrev is if you do it quickly.
After playing around with that, keep your foot 1/4 to the floor, bounce the clutch and grab the next gear (you don't have to even do it @ high revs to help minimize risk to your tranny/clutch while you are screwing around)... takes some coordination to do it at partial throttle, my right foot always wanted to push or lift, @ WOT it's easy...you just keep your right foot planted on the floorboard...
You'll notice that shifting with out lifting (right foot), will "launch" you into the next gear instead of your normal granny shifting of gradualy engaging and matching revs, down to up.

BTW: powershifting will also help maintain boost between gears...
I think that is probably where the most significant gains in time are...no wait to spool between gears anymore because you never lost the boost you built in the previous gear...

first tranny in the car had 87k miles one day just broke like 3k miles later. this tranny was rebuilt before i got it has about 4k miles on it, very hard miles though has about 20 drag runs on it and random driving. i don't have a reciept for who or how it was rebuilt but it was better than my original broken tranny and it came with the car. judge ito will be rebuilding one or both of my trannies and we have a few tricks up our sleeves. apparently 400rwhp is enough to break the trannies because boostn7 also did some damage to his tranny
