Please don't put the "Tornado" in the same class as a K&N. The Tornado things are almost certainly snake oil. They're making someone some money, but not making anyone much HP or improving gas mileage.

The screen damage/deformation may be related to the pressure drop across the screen ... delta pressure results in force, therefore deformation.

I am sure it is, but I am trying to put some numbers to it, the shear weight or force induced by the flowrate @ full power is enough to exceed to the strength of the thinner mesh, resulting in it collapsing if the gauge of wire is not strong enough to resist the forces acting upon it.

At work now, so it's a bit hard doing "car calculations" when I should be updating the database

PS: "coffee beans" are no where near as hard on the strainer

Hey boys, as I was driving to work this morning in my first gen I looked up at the sky and the **** was a redish colour, hazy looking? bit like a bush fire or something similar ?

Well I get home tonight, listent o the news and there has been the biggest dust storm in our recent history, basically across the whole eastern sea board there was a clound of "top soil" which had been blowed up into the air from ground level through to 3km into the atmosphere ! an estimated 10 million kilograms of dirt !!!! Just a week before we had a massive dust storm in the capital city which blanketed the whole town in a thick red layer of dust, we are experiencing one of the worst droughts in living memory which means that the slightest gust of wind carries with it alot of top soil. Funny we started talking about air filters !

After seeing this, I stopped off at the auto shop to get a new bottle of K&N filter oil to redo my air filter as I washed it on the weekend and ran out of the oil treatment ! Oh well she is done now, so let the ****** ****** dust storms continue I am prepared !

PS: As a side note I remember reading ina Bosch book once that the average air on a crystal clear day has 40 parts per million of dirt suspended in it, that equates out to around 22 grams of dirt per week going through your engine via a "coffee strainer filter" or about 1.13kg of dirt per year. That is assuming you use 50lt of fuel a week. Oh that figure is for "ideal" clear weather conditions, it does not take into account what is thrown up of the road from other cars or any other types of dust of shoulders of the road, let alone any types of of bitumen travel which I assume RX owners rarley do

Enough of this "dirty" topic, I will stick with my K&N even if it does cost me a bit of power, I realy don't care when I know what the alternatives are for my poor little engine

Speaking of filters.
What do you guys think about the ARC Intake box. It looks like a wedge shaped aluminum box w/ two flat filters. One on top and one on bottom.

I do not know about these products mentioned, but your filter supplier should be able to provide specs in regards to.

Air filtration i.e. How many microns in "size" of particles will it stop, if your filter guy cannot tell you this, then he is not the guy to buy a filter off !

Another good one, but you can get this from various magazine tests is to see whaht flow rate a certain filter is good for for a given pressure drop, usually done over a set std.

Most important though is the filtration specification, dust and dirt particles are the "biggest" killer to a rotary engines seals. The general rule is go with the filter with the greatest surface area, you see it a bit with Hi HP Nissan's where they run dual air filters, more surface area = less pressure drop.

Sorry to bore you pro's with basics but for the benifit of newbies etc, spend the time and if necessary do some clever engineering to shoe horn a big MF filter in there, your engine will love you for it

I got a couple of sources ! My favourite text reference is "1000bhp grand prix cars" a superb book beyond description in detail. I bought it when I was 17 believe it or not (12+ years ago) and I had no idea I would be into turbos and cars the way I am now, but this book goes into great detail of EVERY engine made by every manufacturer up to the 4 bar limit of 1987, very nice reference material, it was published by race car engineer I think ?

I have other reference texts, but yeah it shows my age I suppose ?

The best way to learn is keep your eyes and mind open and if you have the time and patience for new things try to learn so the maths or engineering behind the various subjects, F1 related stuff is by its nature very well explained and in great detail, and as has always been the history in the past we all end up eventualy using "their" technology albeit 20+ years later ! In the early mid 80's programable EFI with spark control was a dream ! of immense expence, today we have more systems to choose from than could ever be imagined
I look to F1 for my inspiration and ideas for sure, some other arenas of competition adapt things faster, like Mazda in endurace champion ship had telescopic inlets 1 to 2 years before F1 engineers adopted this technology (though they applied it to exhaust manifolds as well)........

So yeah, you can learn alot by looking around !

I can't believe we got such "ignorant" people who think a screen over the turbo inlet would outperform a huge K&N filter.
Geez people need to go take some ME classes for fluid / gas dynamics...
