Question How to remove nipple from water pump housing?

What's the preferred method for removing a nipple from the water pump housing?

Do you simply cut the nipple off with a cut-off wheel, and drill and tap for the required plug or fitting?

Can you heat up the WPH and pull it out with vice grips or a slide hammer, or use some other technique altogether? Grind it off and weld it closed?

What sort of tools do you need? I'll break, er, try anything once before taking it somewhere to have it done... Thanks.

I need to remove this:

... because of this:

Cut them off flush with a cutoff wheel and then drill and tap for a 1/4" NPT thread. The drill size is just big enough to remove all of the pressed in fitting.

Thanks. I think I'll go the cut-off wheel route.

Smack it with a hammer then use plyers to grab it be twist it back and fourth as you pull it out.

This is the BEST method. You'd really be surprised how easily these things can come out...

I've honestly prob taken thousands of pressed in tubes out with theis method. Only time it doesn't work is if the tube is rusted out. In that case then either drill it out,use a tap then twist and pull or use a e-z out to take it out.

Rx, do you need to heat it up before you hit it with a hammer? Or just clamp it down in a vice, whack it with a hammer driving it into the housing, and then wiggle it out with pliers?
