Has anyone put an inline oil filter for the turbos?

Has anyone put an inline oil filter for the turbos?

I just purchased a T72BB and wondering if its worth trying to put an inline oil filter just for the turbo. If so, anyone have pics of the set up?\

I'd say it is worthwhile, never really thought about it before, but it is unfiltered oil coming from the engine. Properly sized, and speced, it cant hurt. A nice inline filter, that's easy to clean would be the ticket, I'd check Summit. Carl

I can't remember where I saw the thread, but it was recent. Someone had plugged the stock oil feed hole and ran a line from a T off the filter housing. That would be essentially the same thing.

I had a friend with a DSM that put a nice billet K&N oil filter before his BB turbo. He was told since it was BB it was even more important that the source was clean. He sold the car pretty soon after the install, so I'm not all that sure how it worked out but I've been intrigued by the idea ever since.

Thanks guys for responding.. I'm not sure how I am going to do this.. I've done some search on the forum and only thing I found was some guy putting a cooler for the turbo (oil cooler).

Any suggestion would be appreciated! I'm getting my 13b this coming monday and will start my assembly. Hope it will be running by April of next year.. for the Deals Gap run.

I had actually thought of putting an oil cooler dedicated to the turbo it's self, hadn't though of the filter though. I'll definatly look into putting a filter before the turbo or running the oil feed from the oil filter.

Good idea though.

It was something similar to this.

He just put it between the oil supply line to the turbo and connected it to the turbo.

I also think that the filter needs to be changed pretty often, as clogged filter will lessen the flow and maybe causing bigger issue later.. Luckily its not my daily so I don't think changing the filter every 6 months isnt going to be an issue.

Glass man, I'll check into that.. where did you find that pic??

Exactly, I think these are all good reliability mods, but we need to be careful not to compromise flow, and to adjust the volume of the system accordingly. Anyone installing an OIL cooled only turbo needs to upgrade there oil cooling system IMHO. As far as I have seen, few do it.

Since we are on the topic, if your oil, and water temps are equal, and at ~200 or below, you are good. if your oil is hotter than your coolant you need to upgrade your oil cooling. Just a rule of thumb I use, I think it is valid. Carl

Chances are you're going to be changing this one more than an inline. Just one possibility. Why add another filter that the main one can accomplish itself? This is of course if you want to run new lines like this.

I'd say it would actually make oil contamination worse if you installed a in line filter. When ever you'd crack open that oil line to clean you induce contamination. The engine oil filter should be more than enough to filter the oil that goes to the turbo. Now installing a small cooler (maybe a auto trans cooler?) is a intresting idea if your oil temps are high. Something to think about.

Inline screen type oil filters like the Moroso unit are not meant for the kind of filtration you need for a turbochargers bearings. They are meant to filter out large particles and metal chips and are useless for the type of filtration you are talking about here.
For the kind of filtration you guys are talking about you need to filter out very, very small particles. The bypass type filters found at the links below are what you need.

I had an conversation with a friend and not I'm thinking about magnetic plug to help with trapping smaller particles.. As often as I change my plug, I think i'm going to pass on the idea about the inline filter...
