going in for a tune tomorrow

So im taking my FD in for tuning tomorrow, just got done breaking in the motor. Its a fresh rebuild with 3mm seals and a streetport. And gt35r with denso pump, 850's and 1600's. Kept the revs below 4k for 1000 miles no boost, then under 6k for another 1000miles mild boost and ive put another 500 or so on it still keeping the revs around 6k max and not going wot or full boost. I changed oil at 500miles and 2000miles. Got a new fuel filter and brand new #9 plugs to install before I take it in tomarrow. Ive been watching the coolant level very closley and found 2 small leaks in the first week but it hasnt lost a drop in several weeks now, never went over 83C. Installed dual oil coolers last week. Its running stock ignition and the only really uncompleted part of the setup is the radiator hasnt been rotated for V-mount yet, I have a hacked up duct to get some fresh air to the v-mount intercooler and block the hot air from the koyo in stock location, as long as the ait's dont get too high it should be ok right? I see ait's of low 40's in the day and high 30's at night on the pfc with stock sensor location. So is there anything else I should do to prepare for the tune other than the fuel filter and new plugs and knowing that my cooling system is 100%?

Nah I'd say you got the basics covered.

I'd give a once over on all the I/C couplers and anything rubber though. Just make sure nothing simple is goign to let you down hwile you're there.

Let us know how you made out!

You might want to look into a HkS twin power amp. if your planning to go over 20psi, but then again, with only one denso pump, I'm guess your gonna stay below 450whp then. I would also ask your tuner if he will require different plugs or what not. The best person to ask is the person tuning your car, they should be able to give you options

You might even look in to the Jacobs 1000. I think it is a little cheaper than the HKS and works just as well. I know that RX7.com sells them. Good luck with the tune and take a vid.

450whp haha, no way. I got the .82 gt35R and tuning for pump gas only. Im hoping for 350-360 at 1bar. Hopefully stock ignition will work for that level of power, if not ill probably go with the hks.

Didnt get a dyno sheet or numbers, the software was messed up on the dyno, so it was basiclly just a road tune in a controlled enviroment. Yoshiya spent alot of time on the car and it feels great. For the amount of time he spent on the car and the price I think it was well worth it. Im really suprised at how smooth and easy the car drives at low and midrange rpm, you would never know whats waiting for you if you punch it. Ill probably try to get to a local dyno for a power pull just so I can have an idea of what my power curve looks like, but i honestly dont care what my peak power is.

That's the best way to look at it, if it runs fine on the track & the street then it really doesn't matter how much you make if you're happy with it.

If you're looking to test your car in a few months, I'm going to try to put together another dyno day at Bottleblown so I can run my car again...I discovered that my base timing was 4 degrees retarded and with the help of Brian Cain, I've remapped my timing curve and still have some more to go. With the adjustments I've made the car is a LOT faster but the dyno will tell. Anyways if you want to run your car with us, let me know and I'll keep in touch.

Yah man, I was actually hoping that you guys would be doing another dyno day at Bottleblown sometime soon, that would be the most convenient place to go. Thats crazy that your car will be even faster after what you put down last time at 23psi, are you still going for 25psi too?

If all goes well I'll be shooting for 28 when go back to the dyno. I can't go any higher, I only have a 3 bar map sensor.

did you have any issues with air temps? I know when I tuned my car with my vmount, and didn't rotate the radiator, we had to spend alot of time letting it cool. you have any of that?

DriftDreamzSS,

Keep your boost down a bit below one bar and give yourself some wiggle room. I'm a weirdo about it and I've been criticised heavily by some people in the past, but I like to err on the side of caution especially when it comes to pump fuels. See, you can tune for 1bar of boost (the common target for the average, modified FC/FD owner) but it may not be reliable 100% of the time. The big culprit is the combination of the variability in pump fuels and the engine bay that tends towards not being engineered with a strict focus on heat expulsion and efficiency.

If you need any timing curves or a base map for the Power FC for your car, let me know and I'll be happy to cook something up for you.

Thanks for the advice. I had the car tuned to 1 bar but I have it dialed down to about 12lbs just for saftey. I dont have a datalogit so I actually hand wrote out my IGL and IGT maps and then made another hand written sheet of the split, It really sucked but was just too confusing to view on the commander. I made a few changes to split and pulled some timing out of the p11/n14-p20/n20 range. Is there a blank chart available anywhere so I could enter my data and post up my timing maps for opinions/advice?
