FD GT40R (Reliability)

Hello,

I was wondering what is the reliability of a RX7 GT40R powered street port? I'm planning to be in the market for one.

here are some of the mod list;

Performance:
*Rebuilt 13B-REW - Street Ported
*Blitz Sequential Boost Controller I-Color
*PLX R-500 Datalogit, EGT and Wideband
*Hybrid GT40R (Custom)
*T4 Manifold
*44MM WG TIAL
*50MM BOV TIAL
*HKS Twin Power and Harness
*Megan Racing Midpipe
*Racing Beat Resonator
*Kaaz 1.5 Way L.S.D
*Exedy Twin Plate Carbon Clutch
*3' RX-7 Store Downpipe
*Apex'i N1 Exhaust
*Trust/Greddy 3Row Intercooler W/ Greddy Compression Elbow
*Fluidyne W/ Stock Electric Fans
*Billion Silicone Coolant Hoses
*Feed 1.2 Bar Rad Cap
*KG Parts Primary Fuel Rail
*KG Parts Secondary Fuel Rail
*850cc Injectors x2 (Primary)
*1600cc injectors x2 (Secondary)
*Aeromotive FPR
*Greddy Pulley Set
*Battery Relocated To Hatch
*Greddy Oil Catch Can
*2x Walboro 255lph Fuel Pumps
*Microtech LT8s Standalone/Fuel Management

Would this be able to be driven daily as a daily driver car?

thanks,

lol... It can be daily driven , but a car of that magnitude isnt exactly dd friendly.

Gas mileage is non existant on it.

Make sure the tune is spot on and that all maintenance is done .

Go GT35/40 or T04Z....or even a Turbonetics T66-T77. These make mad power with lower boost levels keeping the engine from exploding. You want a unit that makes its efficiency around 14-20 lbs of boost. GT40's and up like 25-35psi.and up! Too much for a reliable daily.

reliability is such a bullshit word tossed around with a big question mark.

i do own a daily driven GT40R and the car sees a good amount of boost (10psi/15psi +/-) about every time i drive the car. My timing and fuel are moderate to safe.

Last year I drove around on a T88-34D, it ran fine with safe-to-moderate timing & fuel maps @ 25psi +/-. I think you'd need to research a little more before asking the age-old questions. You'll find the answers.

It is all about driveability in traffic.
In the early days of the FD before this site ever existed, many owners did not drive there cars every day.
I did from 1992 to 2003 without any problems. The car was stock untill I start modding it around 1995.
The reason I stopped driving it to work was our office moved and we no longer had covered parking (Houston).

I have a very similar setup in my FD, i'll tell ya, it runs very strong, gets terrible gas mileage, but i haven't had any reliability issues under low boost (16psi). I would not, however, recommend it as a daily driver, more or less just a weekend warrior machine.

Im making 496.0h/p and get 20+mpg on the highway at 75/80 and about 14 mpg in the city if you have your computer tuned right and know how to work your right foot and stay out of boost whats the problem!

1. How well the cooling system works in stop and go
traffic.

Cooling is very efficient you won't see anything overheating or even going close to that, Running two electrical fans have a oil cooler and everything is monitored by the gauges.

2. Running a safe and reasonable boost that will work on street gas.

It will be tuned for 94octane. Currently running ONLY 7psi. Full tune will be 15psi, also on pump gas.

3. Does the engine porting and tune along with clutch
engagement make the car easy to drive at low
speeds and get moving from a stop?

Car is easy to drive like a new car, my brother prefers my car over his brand new MazdaSpeed 6.

4. Do the plugs not foul out during stop and go driving?

No they don't, I've never "flooded" my engine or had that happen. I have a HKS igniter, called the "HKS twin power" it amplifies the spark to the plugs.

Questions that I have ask and gotten as replied : ) sounds to me it should be reliable daily driven car? As for that goes, what other question should I ask?

thanks,

I think you need to spend a little more time reading about what is actually involved in a single turbo setup at 7psi.

in other words - why not run a GT60R? you can run it all day without any problems or how about a GT110R? Where i'm going with this is... the turbo size doesn't dictate your "reliable" question, your driving habits do s does the tune of the car.

in terms of the "reliability" issue... ditch that old MicroTech box for something smart enough to control the OMP (AEM for example) OTB. As we've said, tune the car with a nice safety margin and call it a day.

i hate to come off as an *** but these are topics already covered to great lengths in the forum archives;

water / methanol injection wil improve reliability even further , giving you a pretty fat safety margin.
