downpipe ping?

Since i could remember there was always this ping/exhaust leak sound coming from the downpipe. It sound as if the exhaust pulse is resonating the pipe, I've checked all my vbands(3 of them) and they are not leaking. It's a 3inch downpipe, exhaust v-band on the turbo exhaust 3.5inch(gotta check again). Possible that a 3inch down pipe is small for my T04S and a 3.5inch downpipe is needed?

video of the sound

There's a good chance there's nothing "wrong" with your car. You just have bigger ports (changes overlap) and exhaust piping/manifold that are not designed to muffle sound.

If we are on the same page, its normal. Most downpipes are 16 gauge( .065" wall) and a lot of the pulse noise resonates right through. Same thing will happen if you build a sheet metal intake manifold with similar tubing.

I have a 3.5mm down pipe/cat replacement section off of JIC Spec 90 on my car (1mm stainless) to really heavy thick RB 3" cat back section on my FC.

The down pipe has the ping like crazy.

Larger piping will resonate worse than smaller pipe and there will be increased pressure blow down from exhaust port to down pipe increasing the strength of the "ping".

I might try header wrap to help deaden the noise, but I know it will shorten the lifespan of the down pipe.

its wrapped with 50ft of 2in header wrap. i did have my manifold wrapped but after a week it crumbled off.. but pretty much your saying is im stuck with the ping unless i get a thicker walled pipe

You don't buy performance parts because they were engineered for low Noise/Vibration/Harshness

He means the parts are designed to make more power and the creators weren't really interested in "Noise/Vibration/Harshness" like the OEM's are.
