Do-it-yourself Street Porting ??

I plan on trying to do a street port on my 13BREW when I get my single turbo, but really don't know where to start and how much to port. I've tried to contact a lot of the performance shops (RP, SR, RacingBeat, KD, Mazdatrix, etc) for templates as a starting point. Most shops said that they didn't use templates, but did each porting from experience and from just looking and learning. The only shop that actually sold templates was Mazdatrix, but only for the intake template ($52). For the exhaust porting here is what they wrote:

"Basically, on the exhaust, you just want to round the top a little. You don't even cut into the outer chrome surface. On the bottom, you want to round it also, but go a little deeper. No more than about 2mm into the chrome."

That seems a little conservative to me. I'm about to just say f--- it and start porting the housing myself but don't want to go and mess things up. Anyone with any advice/templates about porting? Should I get the templates from Mazdatrix or just do it without them? Will templates help? In addition, some shops won't do the porting unless they put the whole motor together because they don't want you to see what the porting dimensions are. Guess I've rambled on enough . --Tommy

porting

I've always been tempted to do the porting myself!..Since i have new side housings and rotor housings i might have to let POWERHOUSE take care of the porting..They want 395.00 for the whole STREETPORT job. Email me if you want their #. I dont have it on hand right now.

I recommend getting a template. If you can't freehand them from experience, then it is worth the $52 to have consistency between the housings. Make sure you get some Dykem or other layout fluid. Mazdatrix's templates come with the port scribed on them, and they need to be cut out before use. Don't skimp on the grinding implements though! If you don't have a dremel, go pick one up and then add a flex shaft extension, and a selection of tungsten carbide bits. The bits tend to clog on the aluminum while you are cutting the template, so have a block of ferrous metal nearby to occasinaly grind on and clean the tip -- the side of your benchtop vice will work for lack of anything more convenient! If you have none of the above currently, $150 total will get you the dremel, lots of FUN griding devices, layout fluid, and a template. If you feel like extending the opening side of the port towards the O-ring, you can 'update' your template by placing it back on the housing and enlarging it the new dimension you cut in the housing. Think of the feeling of accomplishment after porting your own engine!
