Unhappy Coolant in downpipe

I have been losing coolant somewhere and I cannot see any leaks or spots on the ground. The other day I had to remove my turbo to change my gasket and noticed that I had a small pool of coolant in the downpipe and it looked like some coolant around the turbine. I figured I have been blowing coolant through the turbo but I do not notice any white smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Also I just called turbo city and they said that is not even possible. Can anybody chime in that knows more about turbos than me and let me know if this is possible?

If this is truly not possible then I am losing coolant somewhere else, but where?

Let me know guys.

Greg

rent a pressure tester for the cooling system, pressurize the system to 14psi and check the turbo/exhaust to see where your leak is coming from. yes it is possible for a CHRA to crack and leak coolant BUT it must be a water cooled turbo. we do not know if your turbo is or isn't water cooled.

Okay I might have found some good news that I hadn't noticed before. This morning I started the car up and the low coolant buzzer went off so I topped off the overflow tank, I filled it up all the way and immediately noticed that it went down. I looked under the car and notice some anti-freeze on the ground, I figure I should move the car and make sure it just wasn't what I spilled. So I back the car up a bit and look under and I see it constantly dripping and I know I didn't spill that much. So I am crossing my fingers that it was just a cracked overflow.

Wouldn't explain why there would be coolant in the downpipe though, so it seems your good news is irrelevant news

I thought about that and I think when I was removing the turbo some coolant must have leaked down there when I took the coolant feed line off the turbo. I hope that's what happened.

So I was working on the car this past weekend fixing exhaust leaks and figured I'd rent a pressure tester for the coolant system while I was at it. Ran the pressure test and after a few seconds I noticed the pressure dropping so I look around for leaks and found it. There was a leak at the upper hose that goes through the firewall for the heater. I hope that was the only one.

Yeah that fixed that but after taking my car to the shop for what I thought was going to be an easy fix for the oil leak and exhaust leak ended up costing me a lot more than expected when they informed me that my turbo was cracked.

believe me... your lucky it's your turbo and not a coolant seal. Then you'd have to rebuild the motor. You should be delighted its the turbo =-)

The motor was just rebuilt so it would be a warranty fix anyways. But yes I am happy that it wasn't the motor. But now the oil and exhaust is leaking again so back to the shop I go. That's okay though because this time it's getting a tune.
