Convince me to go single ....

Ok, I guess I am asking the "big boys" for some help .I have a recently street ported 13b w/ 1300 injectors a nipon fuel pump w/ "modified twins " I wont go into who makes these but the promised 400 hp doesnt look possible. Before I put more money into a lost cause I really think its time to think about going single . I was looking for 400- 450 rwhp, I do a little solo, auto cross , and would like to drag the car a few times a year .. And I know thats possible with a T78 or similar single set up.My modified twins spoll up really quick but my best dyno runs were under 350 rw. I have some issues with the SMIC I have and the cold air box but before I replace them I thought it makes sense to just go single now .If you have any feed back to how your single set up is or better if you live in Northern VA , I would appreciate a ride to see how a single FD runs . My 94 is running great but the last time I ran into a single turbo FD I got my *** kicked .Send me a pm if you have some good advice other then search the forum

im not a master in this feild but id guess that a t04 setup or t-60 would be the best as a t-78 or 88 would have a lil lag durring auto cross

Yep.

In terms of lag Id's say from least to worst would go like:
RX6 Good for ~400RWHP @ 18PSI (maxed)
TD06-25G ~390RWHP @ 18PSI (maxed)
GT3540 ~500RWHP @ 21PSI (maxed)
T04E (this is just slightly bigger then the TD06-25G)
T04S (not sure what it's capable of since I don;t know anyone running one)
T-78 ~600RWHP @ 28PSI? pretty laggy
T-88 Big HP with big boost & laggy!

Intercooler setups play a big part in "lag" as it takes me a while to pressurize the 3-row I'm running. If I knew what I know now I would have just gotten a 2 row.

Im sorry but your rx6 theory at 400rwhp MAX at 18psi is way off, again ive seen 467rwhp at 18 psi on this turbo

wow, I was way off, the T78 puts out 600rwhp ??? I dont want that much power. Any suggestions to be in the 425-450 range ? I am going to search but if you are running in those HP range...what do you have ?

Thanks

I'd suggest GT3540. Good power....easy 400 rwhp @ 15ish psi. Good spool times, dual ball bearing etc.

Do a search. There is a shitload of info on the 3540

just for a little side info and comparison the t78 is not like garret turbo szing by part number it is not a 78 mm turbo. its around 66-67mm and is a hybrid mitsubishi TD07/TD08. it provides a solid 450rwhp at a moderate 15psi on my streetported motor and lag isnt NEAR as bad as everyone says and its surprising for a nonball bearing turbo. now with its surge like it does it would be very hard to drive without being a damn good drifter and just powering it all teh way through a corner to keep it spooled. teh t78 would work"decently" on a full road course but the short tracks that autocrosses are are not t78 friendly.

GT35/40.

Twins are a PITA. My RX6A feels a bit slower to build power at low rpms but I think it is an illusion. The single hits so much harder at high rpms that it feels sluggish.

On the dyno my single makes more power from 3000+rpm than the twins.

ROTFLMAO........Too funny. Well for the sake of the kid and my sanity I think its time to plan my single set up. I did some research on the GT3540 and its a beast . Am I right from 400 to a possible 700 hp out of this ? Thats amazing .... I dont think I will auto cross it with that type of power but it would be a fun drag car . I did some math and 500 rwhp can be done at my budget .PM me if you have some time to walk me threw some of the detailed items I will need to get once I am in the 500 hp range .

For what its worth , much better humor on the single forum ...the advice is all welcome

SUPPORT!

You'll need supporing mods.
Fuel pump
Fuel injectors
ECU (I'm using the Power FC & I like it)
Boost controller
Exhaust system
Intercooler
Radiator
Plug wires
& run cooler plugs. I used to use non-platinum 9's all around, but now I use gapable B10EGV plugs with a .022" gap & love 'em! They are a little fouled from running way too rich, but once they warm up they don't miss a tick!

Let see , I didnt mention all of my mods .... I have a street ported core , Apexi PFC, , 1300 cc injectors ,Nippondenso fuel pump ,M2 downpipe w/ PFS cat back,Fluydine radiator , Pettit ast .Misc gauges ... I have a Blitz boost controler on order also .As for my intercooler and air box, its all PFS equipment and will have to go . Most of the single kits I see have downpipes and intakes included . So I think I am pretty close , just a single , midpipe and a boost controler and I have it all ?????

Yep, sounds like you're about good to go. A high flow cat is also an option...

You can calculate it yourself. I don't know your max hp.

So would the 1300cc injectors be too small with a GT3540 ? I think I can deal with the additional mods to push out 500 hp but will I have to go up to 1600cc ? My primary are still 550's .Thanks again for the advice and I dont think I have any choice but to go single, these twins are just to eratic and I have a feeling they will never put me to the HP numbers I want .

I posted on a thread about the stuff I learned about my fuel system....

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=174768

Also no one mentioned:

stock twin setup = ~76 vacuum hoses.

single setup = 8.

If you auto-x and only want 400 or so RWHP then stay with the twins. With BNRs you can get there. Single turbo isn't worth it for only 400 RWHP. Once you cross the line into 450 RWHP +++ it is worth single turbo, but you are asking for major driveline problems. Not many people talk about these problems, but start asking around .... in places other than the forum!

Well I have tried this route , and the stage II's have fell far short of the advertised 400 rwhp.To add to that there are some quality control issues that I rather stay away from . If I can get 450 -500 out of a single without major driveline modifications it will happen .My auto -x days could be a thing of the past but I do see this as a blast to drag a few times a year .
I will see if I can find any threads about the problems you mentioned "spyfish007"
