What's the best way to control boost on a single turbo?

Well, the BEST way is to have variable compressor blades on your turbo, but this is rather complex and costly. Remember, the word "wastegate" begins with "waste". http://www.aerocharger.com/

The next best thing is to use a very fast reacting wastegate controlled by the ECU (or by a good wastegate controller if you are using a low-tech ECU that doesn't support a wastegate).

Could the Power FC control the boost then on a smaller turbo like a T04E or the Apex/IHI kit? Or would I need an AVC-R also?

Gracias my friend. BTW, I voted for you for the SCC smackdown thing. If you're picked, don't lose to a Pupra.

The PowerFC with boost kit will control a single. I believe the kit uses the same solenoid as the AVC-R does, so it must be good. You do lose the boost vs rpm control as compared to the AVC-R.

gmonsen: But that is the thing about the boost kit for the powerFC, it uses the same solenoid as the AVC-R. After that it is just electronics.

I've bee using Haltech for my EFI, and was originaly using it as a boost controller as well. It worked ok but had trouble holding it in the top end, especially at high loads. Originally set to 12psi and would see sometimes 16psi. I changed to a Blitz single soleniod unit.(There is also a dual solenoid unit which is alot better). Apart from all the extra features it holds boost precisely. It actually boosts quicker and has a faster ramp up than with the Haltech and was very noticable on the street. I'm using a Series 5 turbo ('89?), the one with the bigger exhaust housing and wastegate. The wastegate has been opened up, and the housings machined to suit T04 ehaust and compressor wheels. P trim exhaust wheel. To date it has made 240kW (320 Hp) @ the wheels on 14 psi. Not too bad for a factory turbo and no external wastegate, but in all honesty the compressor is too small to make anymore grunt with the boost turned up.

To clear things up a bit, the power fc with the boost kit can control a single turbo up to 2 bar's or roughly 30lbs. Is this better than the AVC-R? I highly doubt it. the avc-r has many features including the boost per rpm adjustment. So in my opinion save your money on the boost kit and just buy the avc-r and get that pretty blue screen.

Wanna keep it simple? If the Wastegate has an adgustable spring, just run the boost line directly to the intake manifold. No electronics needed, and it's very stable.
Change boost by changing the screw on the wastegate.

I have a Turbomaster 45mm external wastegate and Haltech boost controller.

I have a very large turbo.

The boost controller held 25psi and C16. We had 20psi at 4000rpm and it held the boost nice and steady.

Any questiosn, please direct them to HITman as he is my tuner and plays with all the buttons.
