best motor oil?

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
Me too, In Australia we get the choice of 0w 30 or 5w 50, I run the 5w 50 and realy do find it to be a first class product (no I am not sponsored by Mobil !)
I used to use Castrol 10w 60 (formula R) and changed when I rebuild a competitors engine (of which I knew the full history) upon tearing it down the oil control rings looked like they were new ones which had hardly even done 1000km of run in let alone very hard racing for 10 times that distance...I changed to Mobil 1 from that day onward and have never used any other product since.

best oil
The best oil hands down is ROYAL PURPLE, went to a car show and saw a demonstration with the product, pretty amazing they showed the test with all the other major brands, alot less friction and lot less heat. good stuff

Actually, I did some good testing in this area as well as talking with a lot of the tuners around here. It is well known the rotary injects oil into the chamber and is burned. You really want the oil to burn and ash - not turn to a gummy mess or not burn at all. This is the reason to first use a full mineral-based oil.
The best one, IMHO, is Kendall GT-1. I use 10w-30 (I think this is viscosity) in the motor. This seems to burn clean and have no ill effects. I also change the oil every 2,000 as well with the filter.
I guess I need to use Kendall in the 911 as it was burning about 3 quarts the first 1,000 miles. It has been less thirsty on the oil of late.
Lastly, I tried Mobil 1 in my old 3rd-gen RX-7. I noticed a real difference in performance between the regular mineral-based oil (Mazda oil) and the Mobil 1. The Mobil 1 seemed to have less performance. I spoke with some friends around here, they said the apex seals were probably not sealing completely and losing hp.

There is a new oil out by Mobil in the 0-40 viscosity. This is recommended now as thee oil to use in the 996 Turbo. Yes, Mobil 1 has the best synth oil made. Mobil 1 I use in all my cars - except the RX-7.
bye bye

Oil test
I did a simple test with Mobil 1, Texaco havoline 3 and Castrol.
After reading about various test with oils I decide to try my own test.
This is called the "teaspoon on the fire test". (I know not too scientific, but hey should be close to oil injection in the rotary)
Mobil 1 vaporised leaving a very thin light colored residue.
Castrol did not vaporised as much as the Mobil 1, but left a gummy brown residue.
Texaco (with anti-vaporisation properties) turned to a very dark brown gummy residue. Since then I've always used Mobil 1.

Sounds like Mobil 1 seems to be better in your test.

I've been using Havoline 20W50 non-synthetic exclusively on the advice of a certain rotor-man. It did seem to cure a cold-smoking problem (he says it's "friendlier to the oil control rings" on his site) but now you've got me worried about residue.
I will never again convert a car to Mobil 1 without first re-sealing it... found out the hard way that high miles engines and fresh Mobil 1 do not mix, and the oil tries very hard to escape.

Synthetic oils
It was non-synthetic Havoline. Try the test for yourself. Even though this was not too scientific, I would never use it in my engine based on the results. I must agree the Mobil 1 did vaporise much more than the Texaco formula.
Mazda Competition recommends sythetic oil as well as Formula Mazda http://www.formulamazda.com/fmbaselinesettings.html

Back in 1992 up until around 1995, when I was still into the RX-7 TT scene, Mazda was not recommending synthetics and only running mineral-based oil in the rotary motors. This was from the Mazda factory. Guys with original Gen III RX-7s, remember. Also, Mazda changed and serviced your oil and filter for free. I took mine in every 2,500 miles.
