APEXi RX6 turbo pass 1 bar...anyone?

Just talked to APEXi USA and they said the sweet spot of the RX6 is around 28-30 psi. Did anyone that have the kit for the FD reached this mark yet? Thanks.

APEXi USA is wrong.

The sweet spot of the turbo is probably around 15-18 psi.

Sure you could boost it higher but it would be difficult to make any more power with that small turbine section.

I run 10-15 psi on the street and 17 psi on the track... one of these days when I can afford racing fuel ($400 / 5 gallons) and after I get my larger primaries in place I may make some runs at higher boost pressures.

I run 14-18 psi on the street with it and it seems to work fine.

Max, you run 14-18psi on 91 octane? that's pretty crazy don't you worry tat you'll blow your motor??

I heard that the RX6 is the sam ballbearing turbo used on honda indy cars and that they are very capable of making high boost (provided the motor can take it)

I already hurt the motor when it boosted up to 30+ psi (?) when the wastegate stuck shut. I haven't been as concerned, and it seems to run fine at higher boost (never any detonation) so I just run it to see what it will do. Now I am thinking that I'll run 17 psi on 91 octane all the time when I get the engine rebuilt. Perhaps I am getting a false impression of how much boost I can run if the compression ratio is down from dented rotors (my old rotors were dented on the first rebuild, though I never ran more than 13 psi). I guess I'll see how bad the current rotors are dented when I get the rebuild, and adjust my expectations at that time. Boost is fun, and I can't resist. Especially since I need a rebuild anyway.

You aren't scared of shooting an apex seal through that nice turbo though? I'm planning on running only 12-13psi on 91 octane but then again, i'm on the conservative side.

$400 bucks for 5 gallons of race fuel? Did you mean a 50 gallon drum? Even still $400 / 50 = $8 dollars a gallon. I figured gas prices over there would be high but not that high!

Edit - I forgot to ask what kind of octane?

I'm sure the turbo will spin to 30 psi... I just think that it will be way off its effiency range. The guys at APEXi Japan and RE Wing told me not to boost higher than 1.5 bar or 21 psi.

Yes, drag fuel is $400 / 5 gallons.... $80 a gallon!!! For Unleaded drag... Sonoco or HKS. Regular 87 octane fuel here is $4 a gallon. Gasoline is strictly regulated and heavily taxed in Korea. I tried to have some VP16 imported but the amount of red tape was enormous. Also gasoline is taxed at 250% and the exact forumula for the fuel needed to be disclosed... not something VP wanted to do. It is a severe headache.

I'm sure I could easily break the 450 RWHP mark with better fuel and a little more boost.. maybe 500 RWHP with nitrous... but I'm afraid to try with 89 octane fuel.

Sure it is?? I seriously doubt it. Ask anyone at Apexi USA for a compressor map for the rx6 and see if you get the long pause on the phone like I did. I doubt they're anything more than distributers for the Japan based company and in no way technically inclined enough to provided any (real) data to us. If they do, it's based on what is already written in their sales catalog. Note: I'm still waiting on someone to get me the right gaskets for the kit..HA! I had to make my own.

-Ed

PS: Get someone you know in Japan to ask Apexi...you're better off.

eris at xs told me that you can run up to 16psi safely on pump gas (91 octane). However I only know of people that run up to 15psi. Those boost levels still seem kinda high for me, anyone boost that high on pump as?

I have run upto 17 psi on 89 octane fuel BUT my engine has lower compression rotors and I run a well tuned E6K.

I run 19lbs on 105 octane at the track and street, and my car is flying(haltech wide band tuned)

On 93 octane, the most i run is 16lbs.
