1st Gen Turbo Conversion
I'm doing a 1st gen conversion with a new Hayes turbo motor. I've bought the engine and the turbo so far. I have alot of questions though, will start with my turbo weights 51lbs, what manifold will support this thing? Next question is my turbo is a Garret TV73, its very large,i'm wondering if this is going to fit in the engine compartment? You guys on the forum have been alot of help so far, my local shops cant even spell rotary, so its up to us to suprise the hell out of them. thanks mike

My engine is a 89T with a big street port and 3mm seals, ceramic coated rotors. I dont have all the paperwork yet so thats as much as i know. There are some specs on the turbo, it has a .75 compressor and a 1.08 turbine. This is going to make you laugh, the turbo is off of a detroit diesel, but i called turboperformance and talked to one of the guys down there and he said itll work fine. I gave him the part number and he said it should be good for 800hp! I really didnt want to go that dam high, but what the hell. My car is at the rollcage shop so i dont even know if itll fit.

Either way, If the Turbo is oversized, it will lag significantly. But I guess if you're getting a roll cage it's for some kind track only.
The engine you're getting sounds good, just build your turbo system around your HP and usage goals. (ie track, street, drag racing, etc.)
Good Luck, and Here's a Good Thread on Turbo 1st Gen converstions , although there appears to a few pages missing right now.

the turbo has a standard T4 flange, i emailed the guy i bought it from and he said what you said, i need a manifold custom made. The reason im putting a cage in it is ive heard of alot of 1st gen turbos going very fast, and id like not to get kicked off the strip or die. thanks for the link ill check it out.

You need to be at the track early Tommorow and don't forget to charge the battery for the cam!
