I dunno... I think everybody is just freaking out over some guy out for a drive in his personal car, where the guy just happened to throw brake ducting in from the radiator opening.

I can't help but think that Mazda would come up with something better than black duct tape to keep the bumper attached..

Mazda has officially confirmed the return of the rotary and it's not what most of us thought it would be:

Well, that's about what I thought it would be:

"Trust me, I truly would love to see another rotary sports car with upgraded technology applied as much as anyone, and Mazda would put the world on its proverbial a$$ especially if it came out with two new rotary platforms--imagine a 2-rotor RX Vision and 3-rotor Cosmo. What gives me pause, however, is the fact that the theoretical new engine--a 16x--is not being developed in any racing program Mazda is involved in throughout the world. If Mazda is intent on bringing on two new, high-performance rotaries by 2019 (or 2020 take your pick), then you would expect to see development engines in race cars being slogged hard through hours and hours of race conditions. It is through race development that the tolerances, durability and strength of components and systems are sorted out. The last two serious race engines for Mazda have been cylinder jobs. Case in point, the FD pretty much came out of Mazda's Le Mans efforts of the late-1980s/early-1990s. Putting an engine into production straight out of R&D just seems unlikely to me. But, we can keep hoping." (2017 Post)

I'm thinking I just refused to face it

Despite being “not really necessary, because the average buyer travels an average of 37 miles (60 kilometers) per day from home to work and back again,” the rotary motor’s main goal will be to “take away any concerns from customers.
Lets not downplay this, it is a big 1st for the rotary!

Second-
This means they have a rotary engine that will pass current emissions! From what we know it is likely peripheral intake port with side exhaust ports.

from the pics and stuff, it appears to be substantially the same as the 2013 setup, which is pretty neat.

330cc single rotor, peripheral intake, side exhaust. it drives a generator and fits in a little frame that is about the same size as the gasoline car's muffler.

its using all the rotary advantages, high power, compact, low vibration, low noise.

so my thoughts about a new sports car are these.

1. everybody on the planet knows the 787B, and they like it. it not only is in bright colors, but it sounds like nothing else on the planet. (it helps that its in every video game, and its been at every track day since 1991)

2. if you haven't driven one the new Miata feels a lot like the FD. the tips of the fenders are in the same places, it has a very similar cockpit, or even bathtub, if memory serves, feel to it. its very light, 2300lbs, and it has no power, but it uses it very well, so its actually quite fast at the track. its missing the FD's carnival ride acceleration, and we can argue about looks, but the FD is obviously just a classic from day one, and the ND isn't (as an aside i think they were looking at Tr3's for the Miata. for the FD there was a Ferrari 275 parked outside)

3. the range extender has a new 330cc rotary.

my idea, in short is just to combine these. we want the sound of the 787B, and conveniently we have a new smaller engine to get parts from, a 330cc 4 rotor is 1320cc, and would sound completely insane. put it into a scaled up miata (or even a couple inches longer with flared fenders), coupe, and you would potentially have something that is cool, and unique.

I don't want to be a downer on this, but, realistically, the way this will be used is likely relatively constant RPM (guessing 3K or so) at relatively light load and combustion-chamber pressure. This would allow a lean, efficient, mixture and allowable emissions w/o overheating the rotor, seals, etc.

Attaining HP necessary for a high-output primary power application would, IMO, get the rotary back into a range where all the issues we are familiar with in our current (1963-2012) engines (poor emissions, low fuel mileage, questionable seal longevity, excess heat in the rotor and combustion chamber, etc.) reappear.

I hope I'm wrong, but we shall see...

I'm sure some rotard will build this if Mazda doesn't.

The engine would be called R1320B. Pretty cool sounding name even if the actual engine would sound like a die grinder LOL.

2-rotor 660cc or even 3-rotor 990cc for a go-cart or motorcycle would be awesome!

It looks too "pedestrian unfriendly" for something that would see production.

just for the record the NY auto show announcement was that the 2019 Cx3 gets an electric parking brake, which frees up a "significant" amount of interior space. not quite sure why this was such big news...

they also showed the Kai show car, which is sort of the next 3. outside gets redone, and it should get the skyaktiv X engine

the facelift for the 6 was a couple of months ago, it gets the turbo engine from the cx9, and some of the stampings for the body get revised, some get thinner, some get thicker. overall its a significant update to the car.

and just to round out all of the updates, the Cx5 diesel is MIA in the US. the ND Miata gets new rear bump stops, and it is sometimes blue.

as an aside the ND Miata feels just like an FD without the carnival ride acceleration, its really good.

Theories...

I apologize in advance if one of these videos have been posted here already but hear me out. I can feel it in my gut, this is happening. I think we will hear a final reveal this year on the remaining details of the Vision Coupe and Sedan, which I believe are being marketed together on purpose as both having rotaries (or at least the option of having a rotary in the vision sedan. Remember not all things rotary are RX.

They are putting way to much time and money into this for them to say "JUST KIDDING!" There are some MAJOR EMOTIONAL MOTIVES behind the success of a new rotary sports car. And as we all know.... Emotion or passion for our cars have driven us to maybe not make the most financially sound decisions. It seems like they have been playing their cards right though and pushing their cars onto the public that will help sustain our rotary passions by purchasing the rest of their fleet first. Which I think they have done a kick *** job of probably ever since 2012. Take the following links to designer Ikuo Maeda to heart.

For Maeda-san, this truly represents a life’s ambition. Having joined Mazda in 1982 aged 23, he has seen the company grow and change, along the way making a major difference himself by penning such important cars as the previous Mazda2 and the rotary-powered RX-8. That was a particularly poignant moment as his father, Matasaburo, was the designer of the original RX-7. You could almost say rotary sports cars are the family business.

Ikuo interview UK NEWS

Next point...

Mazda has had a pretty solid track record with their Concept to Production with their vehicles. With Ikuo as design lead, he may be following a similar pattern that he did with the RX-8. The RX-Evolve concept made its first appearance in 1999 and then made its way as a production model by 2003. That would put us at about a 2019 model year from when they revealed the RX-Vision. I remember that very much because I had been looking at FD's at that time a lot as I was learning to drive and got my license in 2002.

Mazda Rotary Evolution Video Promo Inside Mazda

And Finally.... The most recent thing that has caught my eye... or ears and I would love some extra input on this thought.

Is this recent video clip the sound of a rotary engine in the vision sedan??? I have some really nice head phones, speakers, and the whole shibang! I am an audiophile, audio engineer, and I feel more connected to things through my ears than any other sense on my body. The sound of this car strikes me as a warm start in a rotary. The tone of it is throaty enough to make me envision a 16X Renesis or whatever they want to call it. But it sounds throatier like the displacement has been upped or something. I saw a comment on youtube where the person said it sounds like a diesel. Well.... Mazda like most companies these days share power plants among many of their vehicles. I checked out as many videos as I could of the SkyActive Diesel CX5 and it does not sound anything like this car. I am just saying... This sounds exceptionally different from any motor Mazda has in their lineup at the current moment.

I know this was a mouthful but I am feeling very optimistic today. I have been playing the little audio clip at the end of the rotary evolution cartoon on repeat to the point that my wife keeps yelling "I get it, you want it!".

They have to rev it to hell to get it to move up into the trailer.

Its a torque-less NA rotary for sure!
