On paper it's the same ole same ole. Numbers wise, the ND blows away any and every Miata Mazda has ever made. I think if people actually drove the car instead of just reacting to the hp numbers, they would see/feel the vast improvement in it's performance.

I need to buy a SUV for the growing family (bear with me).
I really like the Honda Pilot, I think it is a great overall package albeit a bit pricey.
In my opinion an SUV has to be able to tow and have AWD system, and the Pilot does that.
But then, Mazda comes out with the smart and gorgeous new Miata. And this concept "future RX7" thing.
And I feel like buying Mazda's all new SUV just to support this company and "fund" the future RX7

i don't have anything major to say here, just like to repeat a primary opinion i have about Mazda.
Mazda's DNA is radical engineering.
Ford's period of partial ownership diluted temporarily Mazda's product and now w Ford outta there it is back to wild things. the future again looks exciting.
while it probably doesn't make economic sense, Mazda if you are reading this, please reprise the most important car you have ever built the RX3. el cheapo, light weight, rear drive rotary.
you will own the kids market and eventually they will be buying your SUVs or like me the stellar "6".
come on Mazda

Yep they've improved it over the last 26 years and this is the best one yet and everyone loves it. It's ranked the best sports car under 35k and even has a higher performance rating than the mustang and camaro LOL. The mags and miata lovers can wax poetic all day long about this car yet no one wants one because it's slow as F#CK!!!! OR BORING AS F#CK!!!! Sports cars are supposed to be thrilling to drive not boring.
20 years ago this would be a pretty fun roller coaster today it's a bore and that's why it's not selling and won't sell no matter how sexy it is until they give it some *****!!!!
You know me it's not like I need a lot of power but I need enough to at least use the frikken brakes.
Lightning Lap 2015: Results, Historical Lap Times, and More ? Feature ? Car and Driver
Note the last place finish. Note the mustangs lap time. Seriously anyone who rates the performance of the miata over the mustang is an idiot and should never ever write a car review again.
PS The new miata was 8 seconds faster than the slowest car to ever run the lightning lap. Want to guess what car that was

You know me it's not like I need a lot of power but I need enough to at least use the frikken brakes.
Well, the whole Miata experience is learning to drive with huge ***** and not using the brakes, but entering the corner slightly overspeed and scrubbing speed with slip angle.
Same thing with my ~250rwhp FD on 18x11 and 295 DOT-Rs.
Scariest car I have driven because you have to come into turns so hot. You don't have the power to do slow in/fast out; it has to be fast in/fast out.
2,500lbs FC with 420rwhp/rwhtq on 255 DOT-Rs was much less scary because you just brake, cruise in and power out of the turns. Not much to be gained trying to push its low cornering potential.

Huge ***** is late braking in a FD or GT3 (at 150 mph plus) then slide that puppy in at about 60 vs 40 or 50 then follow that up with a 4 wheel drift out Twice as hard and twice as fun.
Driving a miata isn't much different than driving a go cart or touch the brake at the 1 marker (at 110 lol), slide in and floor it.

That is exactly it. The Miata teaches you to drive like that.
You don't need the Miata experience since you are already at that point and want more.
That is another step up on the sports car ladder and Mazda should offer that stage of car as well.
I am just defending the Miata and what Mazda builds it for (awesome entry level race car).

What I feel is scary in my ~250rwhp Miata like FD.
2:05 to 2:07 you can hear me against redline buzzer in 4th gear as I slip into the narrow line of smoother pavement next to the telephone pole into a bumpy braking zone.
IDK exactly how fast redline buzzer in 4th is, but I believe it comes on about 7,000rpm or 130mph.
I would prefer the safety of a track with run off area where I could learn to push the envelope at higher speeds more safely, but there are none close to me.

No, the redline buzzer must only be just over 6,000rpm because I remember that my friend radar-ed me at 110mph just before the telephone pole.
Still, I was the fastest there on the radar gun out of Z06s, V8 swapped RX-7, modded Porsche GT2 that got the top time, etc. Because I felt like I had to "never lift" Miata style.
Edit-
Warmed up the car and revved to buzz. It was 7,500rpm which is 137mph actual in 4th. Maybe its better for me if I don't go back and calculate these things...

Yes the miata is a great car to race and a great car to learn how to drive in but it's frikken boring compared to high horse power cars that have literally 3 times the power. Also even this sexy new model has a little sugar in the tank.

No I still love my FDs and GT3 BUT three of my friends have and I expect that number to keep growing
Maybe Mazda will build a modern RX3 but from the looks of it I'd say it will be a GT car and won't compete OR SELL just like this miata.
I'll take either a 75k GT car that out performs the cayman or a 40k lightweight that out performs the mustang. They do either and it will succeed
PS As Howard said if you they make it a high revving rotary it will sell like hot cakes on sale

I still have the FD, but I'm enjoying a 16 Mustang as a street/track car currently(I think it's a good bit of car for the $30k price tag). I drove the car 12 hours to Circuit of the Americas, drove a 3 day event, and then drove home last month... comfortably. People also used to do that with the FD when they were new too, maybe not as comfortably though... but it's a sports car . The MazdaDrivers events at VIR would attract a large crowd back in the day. The owner demographic is probably the worst thing about the mustang, I can live with that. All cars have stereotypes, and those stereotypes exist for a reason. They don't call us rotards for nothing!
Blasphemy video from COTA:
I'm still hoping the new RX-Vision is the new FD. I'll be happy to jump ship when that day comes. Until then, I'll keep trying different cars every few years to try and feel the void

The demographic of ford and chevy owners is changing to include true sports enthusiast because they have improved their sports cars so much in both performance and looks that a whole new kind of respect is warranted.
At this time mazda has a long way to go to catch chevy and ford sports cars but they can easily carve out their own niche with a light weight powerful rotary and that's a car that I think would sell.

Recent Mazda patents show the first major change in the rotary since its inception.
Mazda has done 180 degree change in direction- literally.
Also, Mazda is back in the power game as a turbo in integral to the design.
Mazda files rotary engine patent in US ? SkyActiv-R?

Edit- another source with original patent shown
