i was going to rubber band the cable to the palm, but the car has been sitting on jackstand for over 2 months for suspension and drivetrain upgrades, so im not that motivated.

I'm probably going to inherit an S4 T2 problem child with an Rtek, and was in the process of writing an email asking about the possibility of porting the software to Android when I found this, lol.

Any ideas on time lines or progress? I'm really not looking forward to hunting down obsolete electronics to try to get the maps on this pile squared away...

Sorry guys, it's been a busy few months. No new updates. I'm currently finishing up a huge web project for ASU (it's what pays the bills..), but I have another month or so left before I get back to the android port.

What would be really sweet IMHO is being able to use a Raspberry Pi running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and then send the video out to a double-DIN head unit. You couldn't do any tuning but would be great for monitoring while being a lot more professional, integrated and OEM looking that a a-pillar pod or phone stuck on the dash.

Given that the telcos aren't upgrading Android for most of the devices they've sold the decision to support from the early handsets is nice. It'll mean a lot of cheap devices available for a long time.

Trust me I've looked into this, but not for running android. Doing a full web-based wi-fi enabled front end for the rtek so you could use any web enabled device. I have one here and it's awesome. The problem is while the hardware is cheap, it's still hard to get them, and what happens if the foundation says "sorry we aren't going to make them anymore", then all that work is wasted and we are back to the same problem we have with the Palm...

I thought of rolling my own hardware but apparently you need to be ready to buy 10k units before broadcom will sell you the SoC

I'll be happy with just using something other than Palm - I don't forsee android or tablet/smart phones going anywhere anytime soon - so communication method (Bt/wifi/ Even hard wired) not such a big deal to me, whichever is easiest - just as long as its not the crappy palm touchscreen and software!

Do you have any need for donations to the cause? if so I'd be down to give some if needed to get stuff moving faster. I freak out everytime i see this post updated lol.

The problem isn't really money, it's time. But since time is money I guess one could argue it's a money problem too.

I was thinking of doing a kickstarter type thing, but I already said I would make it regardless..

So the answer is no, not at this time. Even if you donated, I woudn't be able to get to it any faster.

It is probably a good idea to wait as the SoC space is evolving rapidly. My guess is that the Android option has more legs than Linux because the audience is far larger and more dynamic. There are options to Raspberry Pi coming to market so it will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Any updates on this thing? I'll be picking up the 2.1 Rtek over the cold months and it would be really nice not having to buy a palm
