Another Hotsync Issue

There are only a few threads about Hotsync issues, so I haven't been able to find any past info on my issue. I've had my Rtek for about a month, and before I ordered it, I found a Palm IIIxe, loaded all the correct software, and made sure it was able to Hotsync correctly through the serial connection. When I received my Rtek, I loaded up the software to my Palm and had no issues getting it to connect to my ECU. For the first couple weeks of working with the Rtek, every time I used it, I hotsync'd it to my computer without issues.

But 2 days ago after working on my car, I went to hotsync it and it failed to connect to the computer. I made sure my connections were ok, and restarted my computer. It was then able to hotsync and all was well. Yesterday after working on my car I again when to hotsync, and this time it would not connect. I did the same wire check and restart the computer. Still no connection. I redownloaded to the most current hotsync and Palm desktop program. No connection. The error that pops up when starting the desktop program is:

"Modem connection failed to initialize (the selected port, COM2, is not available at this time. Hotsync manager will open the port when it become available.)."

I did absolutely nothing to the computer other than turn it off and back on between the successful Hotsync, and the new error. I've looked up COM2 issues and Palm online and it seems like Palms generally use COM2 serial ports, but it's obviously in my computer or software since the palm is working fine. I've read that having a serial mouse connection can take away a COM port. But mine worked fine, and then just stopped. I'm unsure as to what overroad my COM port and is using it instead of my Palm cradle. Any suggestions I've found online regarding COM port issues get into really techinical computer jargon that's well beyond me.

Has anyone else ever had this issue? Or any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you actually using a serial mouse?

Is it a USB serial port you are trying to use?

Look in the device manager under "Ports" and see if you see com 2 in there.

I did look under the ports section and it says I have COM1 and COM2. For my mouse and keyboard, they're hooked up through the 2 circular serial ports, but there are only 2 of the rectangular ports for which I think COM1 is for my monitor and COM2 is for the Palm. I know this isn't really an Rtek issue, or Palm issue really, since it's all computer related at this point. From what I've read and been able to understand, my computer was fine, then all of a sudden it started to think that some other device or program started to use COM2. I'm just super confused as I didn't change anything on my computer. It worked, I restarted the computer, now it doesn't work.

"circular serial port", AKA PS2 Ports:

Are not com ports.

Monitor "D-Sub" VGA connectors have 15 pins and are female.

True serial ports are either 9 pin male d-sub connectors:

or if it's really old, 25 pin male. (same as above but with 25 pins)

So what exactly do you have? Many times there is an internal com port for an internal modem. It could be conflicting..

I've been off 7Club for a while now since I'm preparing to move. But my car hasn't been running right since the rebuild and new ECU, so I'm sending my car to my engine builder, and today I noticed my Palm batteries died even though I was keeping an eye on the battery level. So now I'm really in a rough spot since I can't make any changes to my ecu because pocketlogger isn't on my palm anymore. At least the settings that are in the ECU itself are basically stock.

But I have the connector in the last picture. That's the one that goes with the hotsync cradle I have from Palm. Today I completely uninstalled the Palm Desktop program and reloaded it. Went through and played with all of the COM settings, and none of them will make the connection with the ECU. I also went into the control panel and went to COM2 and it says it's operating correctly. I don't know what to do anymore. It worked, and then randomly stopped with no changes by me. I may just try a different computer with the same programs installed and see what that does. Unless you have any more suggestions turbo2ltr?

Have you tried using this program instead of the palm desktop?

Pilot Install so far isn't working either, though it seems to be pretty simple which is nice. I read another one of your posts in a different thread about a serial to USB adapter not being able to work. I gave that a shot before reading the other post since the Pilot Install gives an USB port option, but that hasn't worked as you said. So I'm at the point of trying to find a different computer to test this on, or bring it in to get worked on by a computer repair place.

I've been pretty happy with the Rtek so far, but it's frustrating that the technology it works through is so old that when issues like mine pop up, it's hard to get them fixed because a lot of it isn't supported anymore since it's not USB. I know this is my issue since it's computer and software related, and not the Rtek at all. It just sucks that I'm stuck with a barely idling car because I need to pull fuel, but can't because my Palm won't connect to my computer. I'll just keep plugging away at it. Thanks a ton for all the help thus far.
