Rear Rebuild Questions Ford 8.8
Guys,
I spent Saturday night with a few friends at Speedtek getting a new rear ready. None of us have ever rebuilt a Ford Rear before but followed instructions online. I have a few questions about the tooth pattern.
Preload and backlash is all set. Preload was 25 inch lbs and backlash was .009
I would like some opinions on the gear patterns please. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks Allen for the advice earlier.
Thanks,
Anthony
You can see all the pictures here, one is below. I also took pics of the coast side.

Contact patch looks shallow, like the pinion depth is short. what'd you set pinion depth at? any # on the pinion? sometimes ive seen ford pinions with +\- #'s to give you baseline on pinion depth.
atached is nice contact pattern on a 8.8

There's more to it then backlash.
You need to set pinion depth as bacon stated. You'll need to shim it according.
Using ford motorsport gears would allow u to use the factory shim if it was an opened rear.

I like it better than reading
A diff is a diff, ford, toyota, mazda. Some are just harder to make minor shim changes to. Using a non lock nut for the pinion, helps for the multiple shim changes. (replace with locking nut once you get shimed it right)

Hone your OLD bearing so it slides on and off, then take your measurements, once pinion depth is set correctly, press the new bearing on. That's pretty smart.
I'm surprised Allen and Cris are still taking my calls lol.

Thanks for the videos and help with the rear. I am done with it. Roan and I spent quite some time at Speedtek and put it in the car. I swapped over to a 94 subframe so the Justin Samberg rear bolted easily into place. All should be good. Just waiting on a driveshaft now...

Jay,
Here are 2 pics, one of the in the car. The subframe adapter is made by Justin Samberg but I got it through SpeedNYC. He knows Justin and has bought a few so I paid him and he took care of it for me. I believe others also bought their subframes from Roan.
