Inner axle cup recommendations

So yet another trip to the track has ended in carnage, this time the driver’s side inner axle cup decided to fail. I had replaced the passenger’s side last year after it broke the night before pinks. I’m guessing the best avenue would be to get some new ones from ray, then have them cryo treated. Just wondering if there’s a better option…. Aside from ErnieT brand axles for 1900$, I’m only making 465rwhp but I’m wondering if it makes more sense to start saving now and fix it right for the last time, just hard to swallow a 2k fix. Would heat treating be better than cryo since cryo typically better for wear applications?

Thanks for any insight. I should known after tec failed me for having 2 mo expired seatbelts I should have called it a night.

Does that axle damage take out the clutch type diff as well?

Cryo treating should reduce residual stresses, reduce slip planes, and some other grain structure imperfections which improve toughness and fatigue properties. By how much is under much debate without A/B testing.

Mine keep breaking also. They lasted all season on 30psi@500+ hp but on 35psi around 600HP they are just snapping. Last 2 events were a waste of time. I think I'm just going to get the new setup like Ernies.

The price on their website is $2000. Shop price is $1700.

Anthony,
After you snap one how extensively are you cleaning out the area in the diff? The both times I have first removed the broken outer axle, then used a strong magnet pickup tool to get out any chards, chunks of metal.(like 10 passes till it comes out clean 3-4 times Then taping the broken stub through from the other side. Another pass with the magnet from the other side Drain and fill the diff.

Are your tearing down the diff? just wondering if I’m short cutting anything

I decided to pull the rear out, while it was out I checked everything inside and also replaced the bearings. put it back together. Now that I broke the area near the hub, I won't pull the rear again.

Mr. Bacon...
This is money well worth spent. I have been cutting low 1.4 60's with no ill effects. Actually when Anthony was helping me out Sunday I managed a 1.40 which is my best yet. I broke those things every damn week prior to the DSS upgrade. Then the output shaft every 3 passes, lol. Now thats all fixed too

Great news Ernie, I'm glad I picked up this DSS upgrade. Although the DSS told me the stock ABS gears would fit the new halfshafts (outer cups) but they clearly will not fit. I plan to keep the ABS so I'll have some adaptors machined to mount the stock ABS gears onto the outer CV cups.

The only real alternative you have to the Ernie axles would be to run a little higher pressure in the tires so they spin just a tad to take a load off the axles. The only thing with that is your 60ft times are not going to be as good. Like Ernie said, if you plan on racing alot, it's better to spend the money on the good axles because in the long run you end up spending just as much and have alot of headaches. I just laid down over 2500 bucks on a 9" for my rx2 when I paid 2000 dollars for the car, but I know I won't be breaking any rearend parts any time soon.

Get the DSS axles.. I got them in my car, there slightly different then ernies since i'm using a different rear but nonetheless there the same otherwise..

Look at the expensive of going to track and always breaking your axles when you figure the price of the DSS and the amount of time/headaches saved..

I've never had them cryoed and they have lasted a few years without any issues. The first time I broke them I launched at a higher RPM than I normally do and the 2nd time (last week) was a mistake on my part.

We'll see what happens tomorrow.

I think I left the nut for the axle loose... After it broke, the nut was completely loose, I doubt it can come loose from breaking...

I'm on they way to Etown now, I know they are both tight now

I went to the track yesterday and broke the part thats closer to the rear. Bad day to go to the track too, way too cold. Over the winter I'm going to upgrade to the new DSS axles. Good advice Enzo.

That's very possible and have been done using 300m but it's still very limited to the stock dimensions which really is the problem. Even with the stronger shaft what's going to stop gear breakage in the tranny. You will be only moving up the chain to the next weak link and wasting $$$$ in the process like others have done before. Just give in and do it right in the first place like some record holders have been doing as of late.

Nine inch Ford IRS conversion for a Supra.

wow Eh Is that supra axles or custom after market ford axles?
How hard would it be to fit aftermarket brakes with a kit like that onto a FC or FD
or can you machine the FC/FD hub to fit 31 spline ?

Eeek any chassis shops here in Florida can handle a job like that?
Dutchman has a 9" center housing/CV only kit.(no 3rd) Guess I could fab up the rest myself hmmmmmmmmmmmm
