PR's running distributors?

Hi everyone. I just got done seeing some recent pics of top notch drag cars in Puerto Rico and the majority of the engine bay pics that I saw, they were all running the stock style distributor with two coils. Does anyone know if they are also running an ingition box like an MSD and they are just running it throught the distributor/cap. The reason I ask is because I am going to be upgrading my stock ignition on my rx2. I already have the first gen distributor but I want to install an MSD. Most people I talk to tell me to remove the leading ignitor and wire the MSD to the leading for direct fire and then leave the trailing stock. But after seeing all the PR's with their setups I am wondering now. What are you guys running and how are you wiring/setting up your ignition boxes and how do you think the PR's are setting theirs up?

thanks,

Jarrett

What ECU are you running (if injected). If you have the capability of running DIS i would do it. I have seen a lot of fast PR cars as of late running two DIS 2s and 4 coils.

Like so. I plan on doing the same this time around.

that its cause they are using SAKURA ems(SAKURA does not control timing but it has 32x32 fuel maps and a lot of features)in the other hands even the ones running microtech like to run distributors(controlled by microtech)

Then what kind of ignition are they running? They would have to run it through the cap then wouldn't they-meaning not direct fire?

fuel only ecu you need to run distributor. you don't have to run ignition boxes if you don't want to but, if you want performance you need to add msd 6al or msd dig 6 boxes and control your timing mechanically. that easy!!! if you have a computer that controls both fuel and timing then you need different boxes or depends on what ecu you have. some ecu's like tek3 you don't need boxes they use coil packs and a crank trigger, microtech has the same coil packs but no crank trigger.you use the second gen no distributor set up to plug the ecu .but you can amplified the spark of a direct fire microtech by adding 2 msd dis2 boxes or a single msd4dis ..................depents what ecu you like best. I still use a distributor in my car but, microtech is the way to go for the $$$$$

Thanks for the info. So are you running your msd boxes direct fire-waste spark or through the cap? BTW- I saw your car at the Greedy car show on Saturday. Looks awesome. I tried to talk to you and Rene but you were both busy talking to people and my son was getting impatient.

I use two msd boxes one for the leading, and one for the trailing (no waste spark) i still use the cap.the only thing i did with the distributor was, to have Rene lock the advance by welding the inside. this is something you must do, if you want to have total control over your timing.

How can you run direct fire with a DIS 4? I was told that couldn't be done.

Can't be done with a single DIS4 your going to need two of them. I have the DIS4HO's just in case I ever want to run alchy.

MSD 6AL's all the way to 40 psi without any problems. There are many more running higher boost with the same ignition.
