FD stock tranny output shaft (broke)

I broke my output shaft. I was wondering if there is an upgrade (tougher?) output shaft that is available for the stock FD tranny. So far I will go with a stock one and avoid the mistake that broke it. But I like to upgrade so is there an upgrade tranny for the FD or an upgrade output shaft for the stock one, or just put another stock tranny in? Thanks.

I don't think any upgrade is available. How did you break it?

Steps to breaking output shaft:

#1. Make 410 rear wheel horsepower
#2. Use BFG Drag Radials
#3. Install new ACT Extreme clucth and pressure plate
#4. Do a decent 2nd gear burnout with tires at 13 psi
#5. Reverse right into stage and slam on brakes
#6. Don't creep forward at all, just launch at 5k rpm, with full power and grip and gears meshed in reverse. Guaranteed results.

Video coming soon....

Nope. Did a burnout, reversed into stage, launched from there.

I still don't get what you did wrong?

Must have been a quirk....... Lots of guys are pushing alot more power/torque than you and they haven't broken the output shaft.

He's saying he reversed back and didn't pull back forward. That means the shaft is going to have a little bit of play and with grip and power equals a bad situation. It's like the whole idea of preloading....to take the slop outta the parts and reduce shock.

Or i could totally be talking out my *** which wouldn't be the 1st time

No, you are totally correct and thank you for helping me clarify. I agree that my power level did not break it, it's not a common failure.

Actually you're not.

It's a common rookie mistake. Normally would take out the ring and pinion though.

Roland's output shaft was weak allready from much abuse mainly from wheel hop.
His car is also set up too stiff in my opinion for a car running on drag radials.
A lot of people don't realise that drag radials can do more damage than slicks if the suspension is set up wrong.

I did the same exact thing in my red FD. There isn't anything stronger, but chances of it happening again are rare. Just run ETstreets. You have more wrinkle and more to take the shock. Also try a carbon fiber driveshaft. It absorbs more driveline shock than any other stainless or plain steel.

Is there a place that sells a carbon fiber shaft for the FD or do you have to get one made?

I will never launch my car again without ET streets. My car was not set up for drag radials, I put them on when I got it back with street tires. I was told I should have used ET streets or slicks from day one. The BFG drag radials I used have great tread life and wet grip, and also look very fat and mean. Exactly as Crispeed said though, they cause tremendous wheelp hop. The traction is great but they have to be heated up a lot. Since I didn't know much, I figured they would be a good tire for me because I've seen Supras run 8's on them in Orlando once. As far as the driveshaft, I just ordered an aluminum one for $500 from the rx7store, they have it in stock and it's lighter than the factory one. Thanks.

This is completely offtopic but at World Ford Challenge this weekend. The drag radial class let's you use a 275 series tire (That's small). 3 guys went 7.50's between 193mph-197mph. Those three guys were only running a 26 inch tall tire.

That's nuts.
