DSS Pro Level Axles

Well it’s a just a question of when not if, that I will break another factory inner axle cup, so as much as I enjoy trying the same thing and expecting different results. im getting ready to take the plunge.
My car is a trailer queen, and just for drag I was originally looking at going with a Live axle, 4 link and even thought about doin some tubbin/ mini tub. Price between the dss retail price of 2k, and all the live axle parts and fab work would be negligable. (sourcing used parts/doing all the minor fab myself
But then low and behold last night I find someone selling the DSS axles for 200 less than dss!
So wheres the cheapest place to get the DSS pro axles. As much as I would like the live axle, im all for easy and not having the car down for weeks while installing the rear, also b/c I never seem to stay on budget. And all these guys with 6, 7, and 800’s of hp are having no problems with these it seems to be the obvious answer
So can someone send me in the right direction

Len,
I had the same problem you did and actually got DSS to design the pro level setup. They work very well. I've got plenty of 1.4 and 1.5 60' times and yet to break anything in my rear setup. Also food for thought, Banzai's price is pretty good.
Good luck!

If this is going to be a drag race car only, then I don't see why you would want to mess around with the IRS suspension/rearend unless you were going to go for a record in the IRS class. Otherwise slap a solid rearend in there and be done with it.

Jay is right, but money comes into play also. I myself can't justify a sold rear nor a upgrade shaft set up with consistent 1.4's and a 1.39 on stock ones. When I break mine I will do the drive shaft set up. Just seems easier and cheaper. Also on a solid rear I haven't come across a set up that was easy. Not much room for a 4 link.

Well see what a certain ny guy has coming and maybe I will change my mind

Ahhh. Ok. You told me you were going solid. I was waiting to see how you set it up link wise. I know Hinson did a 12 bolt setup but I. Never saw pics.

Speedtek had the chassis guy (same one that did Roy and Enzo's car) come to the shop and check out the FD. After all was said and done it would be a lot of work. He says the FD really does not have much room back there, not like a 2nd gen. I would also have to get new shocks, change from tank to cell, redo exhaust etc. By the time all was said and done it would also cost a lot more. I picked up the cobra subframe from Roan and got a cobra rear going in now since I sold my other setup.

So why the change? Did you break something? Thinking you will gain better 60's off the set up? Better gear selections? Just curious.

Well I sold my entire rear end setup to do the straight axle setup and that did not work out. Roan ended up getting me the cobra subframe for a good deal and I got a cobra IRS rear locally for a good price. I could have went back with a Kaaz etc but for the price I got the cobra stuff it was a better deal.

Even though Eric(Vikingwarhammer), has turned to the dark side and bought a friggen Honda, he had one of the nicest FD's around. He ran a Ford 8.8 and here is a thread with some pics of it in his car. He had the blue FD and ran a 10.0 on the brakes. He also got the car down to 2200lbs. If you're not DQ'd from running a solid axle in your class or if you are going for an IRS record, then the solid rearend is the way to go. YOu can buy ford 8.8's all day long for 200bucks. Putting them in is not that hard or expensive. In the long run you will save more money with a solid rear than a IRS rear and cut better 60fts. Maybe Eric will chime in if he isn't dicking around with those boingers.

This was his car before he lost his marbles. Damn nice ride! This is how I would do an FD

Not planning on being compeditive, I dont have the pockets for that i'm perfectly happy going on streetnights, and maybe even if I bump classes at a even and dont win anything but good et's thats what im in it for. hoping hinson's is in production/ priced right. If not in one of eric's threads he said Davinci Motorworks in Belleville Illinois did his, gonna give them a call this week and see what the deal is, well if their still arround.

Lane is the guy that did the Hinson solid rear. I saw it at the track when finished and talked about it. He was planning on making it a bolt in kit but not sure it was ever offered.

I think Erik and the above davinci shop were related?

Bang for the buck I would just do the axle upgrade and. Call it a day.

well Lane is the guy behind the scenes that does the work. Hinson lives in Birmingham area were Lane lives in Lacey Springs 1+ hour away from each other. I saw the solid rear set up early last season so not sure why its "in production" still?. Might be a little delayed since Lane rolled the vet at the Texas event last week at 220+mph! Walked away, but was air lifted out to be safe. Heard he was doing fine. Lucky man!
