why is my modified n/a so slow??
I've had my 87 N/A for about 2 years now, and have been slowly building on it. I am starting to get frustrated that I cannot make it fast no matter what i do... as far as performance enhancements, I got the racing beat header and presilencer, GReddy power extreme catback, bonez intake, removed air conditioning and smog pump, blocked off the AC/CV, installed 9.5lb aluminum flywheel and ACT clutch and also wired the 5th and 6th ports open recently. from what i've read, with all this done, it should be a quick little car. Unfortunatly it hasn't turned out that way. I don't believe its any faster than it was when it was stock. I've done quite a bit of street racing and have been beaten by quite a few stock pile of junk cars. Is there some kind of problem with my car or are the non-turbo rx's just slow no matter what? I'm very disappointed with the car since ive thrown so much money into it, knowing that if I put those thousands into a honda like my friends have I'd actually have something fast. Is there any step that I have forgotten to do in my upgrading which is holding the whole car back? I mean christ, my old lady's station wagon is prolly faster! I'm happy with the car besides the performance though, I've got some nice big chrome wheels on, and lots of brake and suspension work done as well. The car turns every head on the street, just wish I had some power to back it up... any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry this got so long...

What year of 7 do you have? If its 89+, make shure your vdi is in high mode (I noticed you stripped all emmsions.) Also, you might want to check out doig the throttle body mod (please search), maybe some Pineapple Racing sleeves, and if you want every ounce of power out of it, go buy yourself something like a super-afc fuel controler, and go and get it dyno tuned. (i Recomend this very much) You could also port the intake manifolds for better flow. If you have a s5 (89+) car, this helps tons....and maybe if you are realy serious, go out and buy a aftermarket ignition...but i realy doubt its worth and major gains.
Also, are you shure you wired open the six ports the right way?
The n/a Rx-7 in general just is'nt to fast. I'll get flamed for this, but when it comes down to it, there are faster Hondas. With all the bolt-ons, and a mildy ported engine i made 170rwhp....not to much. CJ

I've dumped all over N/a's before as well for being chronically slow..
I have an 87 n/a and a 87 TII..
The N/A is a good car, recently I got it over the hump of slowness..
I have/done the following
Homemade stainless 2" primary header
RB pre-silencer
dynomax catback
six ports off air pump
Removed sec throtle plates
I still run air pump/acv/mech fan/ power steering etc.
When I first started modding my car I had about 50 rwhp with a G-tech, I finally have hit 107 rwhp, which means I more than doubled the power than when it was stock..
One thing about N/a's, tuning is critical, I have found there is a sweet spot for the TPS setting, and also for the ignition timing, your 6 ports must open +/- 100 rpm of 3800 rpm to really work properly, I actually get a 'kick' when the ports open.
My car breaks the tires loose through 1st and bit of second.. keep in mind its running yoko a520 225/50/16's...
Yes Fd's and modded tII's take me.. But not really that badly, and not by a hell of alot..
I can absolutley obliterate your average ricer honda with 6" exhaust tips..
I would recommend you try different tuning specs on your car before you go throwing it away, or adding any more parts to it.. and get a compression check done...
My n/a makes 112-115 psi per rotor, which is well above spec..
The next thing I am gonna do to it is a porting job, and I have an s-afc left over from my TII to put into it as well as a a/f guage, so I may get a little more jam out of that,. I would also really like to try a larger throttle body on an n/a, something tells me its not big enough...Max

You did not mentioned removing the cat, so I assume it is still in. That is a big power robber.
My NA stock block 83 12A with Weber carb, headers, and cat-back ran flat 15 quarter miles. After mild street porting, cold air induction, 4.10 rear end, it got to 14.5 quarters. This was back in the late 80s.
