What kind of rubber are the stock O-rings made from?
I've just read that the o-rings around the rotor housing may not be compatible with ATF and was wondering what material they were made from? According to my little fluid power data book dextron 3 and Type A are not compatible with EPR, EPDM (nitrile rubber) but are compatible with Buna-N. Viton is compatible with just about anything you throw at it except skydrol 500 which is mostly used in airplane hydraulics (so no worries for us).
Any one know what kind of rubber they are made from?

it depends. mazda has had three different o rotor oil seal o rings over the years.
1. its yellow, made of who knows what. they were used from 70 to 73? these are rare and they are also junk
2. its green; made from i think silicon. they work. they are used interchangeably with the black ones. it is the replacement part currently
3. the black ones, these are viton, they are used interchangeably with the green ones depending on supply, they also work well.

So you don't know what kind of rubber they are made from? The engine I'm worried about is a 13B-RE from a cosmo. Since this is a newer ish engine would this have the viton o-rings?

So any consensus on which ones are the best? If Mazda already stocks silicone O-rings, what are the Hayes ones made out of? We should make database of all the different kinds out there.

People, this thread just flipped from >>OIL CONTROL O-RINGS<< to Coolant O-rings... Two different things!
Atkins sell Viton Oil Control O-rings as an upgrade. I believe the OEM Mazda oil O-rings in FD motors are Buna-N stuff, but I'm not really sure.

Well I guess we don't know what's around the rotor housings. I'll find out when I pour coolant in it, if I have green water coming out of my turbine wheel I guess we know what kind of rubber they throw in these engines.

So wait a minute....what year motors came with Viton Orings and are you refering to oil control rings or the coolant orings???
I didnt realize any of the stock stuff was viton.
I did notice though at mazda a O ring kit that includes the dowell pin orings and the coolant o rings for a 3rd gen is like $205 or so, and the kit with the same parts for a 2nd gen model is only $115 or so. Is it because they are different rubbers or just because there are more 2nd gens out there so demant is higher.
Thanks guys,
STEPHEN
