something that I may have missed... when you break a apex seal, the seal usually eats a rotor, a housing and a turbo

just food for thought

Unbreakable apex seals will always damage the interior of the housing in a cat scratch fashion!

Old thread I know......

but,
Has anybody tried the ALS seals on a street car?
I'm really curious on how driveability is...
It seems people only use these for track cars,
how about cold starts, housing wear?
or even throwing meth injection into the mix.

Here are some pics of my engine after breakdown. It still ran fine, no compression problems at all, but had a coolant seal leak. 70k rough miles on Rotary Aviation classic seals, take a look at the housings:

One of the better examples of RA seals after long term use.
I've seen many others not make it a 1/4 of that mileage and with a lot worse ware on the housings.
It seems it's a hit and miss with those seals.

that seems to me like a combination of a bad oil injection pump pumping synyectic oil into the combustion chambers , bad combination

chris, mabye its because hes using the RA classic seals? i know the damage you speak of with the RA super seals after like 4-5 thousand miles. could this be an issue with the super seals only?

you sir, are correct. the previous owner told me an owner before him ran synthetic in it. but the OMP is ok as far as i know

it was a rebuild by bruce turrentine back in 2001 i think, i assume they were the classic seals. any idea what the brown **** is around the plug hole?

That's carbon buildup. It comes right off w/ some brake cleaner and a bit of scrubbing. Barry Bordes has an interesting theory as to why there's carbon deposits there and it has to do with a temperature differential between the plug land and the housing on both sides of it. Perhaps this is the reason behind the idea of putting grind marks in the water jacketting behind the lead plug in the rotor housing.

...what do you guys think of these...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-1...4506.m20.l1116

...just looking for a good, long lasting, not-housing-destroying seal that can handle a streetported, single-turboed weekend-driven RX... lol ;-)

I wouldn't trust or use any off brand ceramic seals. Besides that, this is a thread regarding unbreakable seals, no ceramics. There's a million threads on ceramics on this website-use the search function.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ALS-A...4506.m20.l1116

...these are ALS seals, afaik metal, (and i would use only NRS when it comes to ceramic).
