Well, form what I know, The leading side is what makes the car run. The trailing side is prettymuch just for emission purposes. I too wonder if there would be performance gains like you stated.

well.... fact of the matter is, you do get power from the trailing, and you wont be running a car with just a 0 split.

my understanding of this is... if you make the trailing hole larger, the carbon from the primary ignition will fill the whole up with carbon... i could be wrong though

This is Mazda's reason via R&D...

The apex seals hit the trailing plug hole first.
A small part of the compression is leaked into the trailing plug hole.
They made it small just to minimize this effect.

Mazda found out, through R&D, the engine loses power when making a bigger trailing hole, because too much of the compressed intake charge leaks into the trailing plug hole when the apex seal sweeps around.

Try enlarging the hole...
Others have tried it and lost power, as Mazda confirmed through their R&D.

DON'T TRY IT! Making it larger does allow more gases to leak pass and can cause DETONATION or PREIGNITION! Especailly bad on a turbo engine.

My car ran on trailing alone and drove around. I had an issue when I was wiring the car and the power for the leading coils was not connected.

Did it run, or run well? It'll run on just the trailing, but it won't make much power.

actually, my car made 280hp with the rear leading plug completely fouled from a very bad ignition wire

Go to http://www.rotaryengineillustrated.com/index.php\

and look at the animations and think about blowby!

From what I read during the debut/debacle of the trailing plug orfice plug (Trailplug tm) a while ago on this forum a well respected rotary expert stated you would lose ~10% of your potential power of a very good ignition split tune if you eliminate the trailing plugs.

Doesn't sound like too bad of a trade off if it really eliminates a major cause of pre-ignition as it would eliminate combustion blowby into the compression stroke as the apex seal travels over the trailing plug hole.
