Question Is it time for a rebuild ?

Have an 87 GXL, 58k miles - only 2nd owner and have put half the miles on it - summer car only

hard to start after it sits for a few days - blows thick white smoke for first 20-30 secs

does not smoke after warm up or high RPM's

coolant does not does not bubble when cap is off

should I do a compression check?

car has plenty of smooth power - slightly unstable at 700 rpm

overheated once, slightly - clutch went out on highway

?? Should I jump the gun and rebuild it before it starts wearing internally - don't mind a good project !

reccomendations anyone ??

Thankx

Huh? I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. Just rebuild it now so it'll be ready for summertime. Apex seals, oil O rings, port job, maybe some rotor housings. These engines are really simple to rebuild. The Rat's Nest on those 2nd gen engines can all come off as one unit (more or less). It shouldn't be too difficult to do it yourself.

Looking back at my troubles, I wish i would have just rebuilt or started my project at my first engines first sign's of trouble (i had bad waterjacket seals)

However it doesnt sound like your engine is in eminent danger, possibly worn oil control rings? Id start collecting $ for a rebuild or if your doing it yourself start buying seals and get your rebuild video

tanks

thankx crackheadmel for being easy on a newbie...

so what your all saying confirms my worry (getting close to rebuild'in er')

where do I get the "video" at???

" not going to just rebuild 'er "- gonna add many mods

my aim is to do some casual slalom racing - not much into draggin - it is an rx-7 (why do people want to drag em? - made to spit out winding pavement!)

is it recommended to go with a supercharger kit or a turbo mod kit for overall racing for rx-7's??
i would guess supercharger for low end torque??

this site rules --- info intensive

Thanx

I got my rebuild video here for $20 i belive

http://www.rotaryaviation.com/overhaul_video.htm

as for supercharging or turbocharging, there are alot of differing opinions. My personal opinion from what i have learned and read is that if you are going to go with foced induction, switching to a 4port engine would be a better way to go, however that costs $ and im not really sure how much of a gain there would be

browse the 2nd generation section of this forum and use and abuse the search function, there _is_ an amazing amount of information to be had, sometimes it can just be a pain to find exactly what your looking for
