Is There Any Performance Gain From An Electric Water Pump?

Is There Any Performance Gain From An Electric Water Pump?

Is There Any Performance Gain From An Electric Water Pump? The engine i would be running it on is a MFR PP 12a with lightened internals. The engine is going to be used for drag racing/street, i was thinking of getting a kit because i had heard there is a fair up in power 5-10 hp when i am revving over 10,000 rpm

theoretically the water pump robs power from the engine to rotate the pump , an electric water pump eliminates that, but im curious as to how much more power can you gain from an electric water pump, most people dont run these set-ups.

an easy fix would be to get an underdrive main pulley so the water pump and alternator turn slower, and rob less power especialy at the high rpms where the water pump is just cavitating anyway.

I´m going to use a Davies Craig water pump when I get my car running again.
The main reason I change to an electric water pump is the possibility to circulate the water with the engine off.
Another good thing is that the EWP isn´t dependent off the engine speed, so the pump can run att full speed when the engine RPM is low... for example in slow traffic a hot summer day!
So it´s more a cooling thing rather than a gain in power.

The pump (EWP or not) in and of itself isn't the biggest improvement on cooling system effciency. I believe that proper ducting ALL of the air through an efficient radiator is the key. Though I agree that the EWP may be more efficient in long periods of stop and go, you have to offset that against the reduced reliability of ANY elelctric water pump.

well what i was thinking was just running one of the systems that uses the belt and electric motor, then when driving it at the track or on a hot *** day running the electric pump and then or a regular day just swaping belts and running it just as an underdrive off the engine, if that makes any sence lol

i would say that you can pick up about a 5hp gain ,and have a major improvemnet in cooling eficiency

The electric kits replace the belt driven pump, as in bolt on to the stock water pump housing. I think to do what you are asking would require a more custom setup tapping into the radiator hoses.
