Regardless of who's got more horsepower or what powerplant or tires, it's going to come down to skill at driving (launching).

You can have a 600rwhp RX-7 and bog it on launch and lose to a stock 300ZX.
Be careful when you launch because breaking a diff or snapping axles will definitely warrant a big loss (although at the power level you're at, it may not be an issue).

Practice your launches and shifting. Get some very sticky race compound tires and some race gas.

My friends' shops have an assortment of Z's and 7's.
Reliability in general sucks for both cars because of the technology and assembly issues.

Once you start talking about heavily modified cars, it's all about tuning and details (using good lock washers, etc).

Good luck and have fun!
Keep it safe and fun. Remember it's just a frikin' car for pete's sake.

What do a 400hp, 500hp, 600hp, 700hp, and 800hp 300ZX all have in common?

They all run mid 11's!

Actually that was a joke I heard about Supra's at the dragstrip (mean on the freeway!) but I still thought it was funny.

If its similar to a Supra there is about a 200 HP curve. Whatever horsepower the Supra has subtract 200 hp from that and thats what the rx7 needs to potentially be just as fast. Just think the rx7 vs 300zx stock for stock... RX7 is half a second quicker and about 60 HP less so that should give you a slight idea of the curve between the two. All I can say is the same thing that has already been said... A Damn good launch and don't miss a gear (I always had a 2nd to 5th problem). Nice sticky tires and tune that Power FC to get every last hp out of it. From a dead start you should get a nice jump on him, but it will be toward the end of the quarter mile where it becomes a good race. You gotta let me know how much you win by

Kinda funny all these 300zx guys are lost in a Rx-7 forum... anyway, I just wanted to mention something somewhat obvious. Pull out the spare tire, pass seat, and any other quick removal stuff... lighter = faster

I don't know too much about the 3rd gen, but if you can disconnect the P/S (if equiped) and A/C belts, that will make a huge difference. Also, get an electric fan if not already equiped. (made a huge diff on my FB)

They have electric fans already. Can't do all the rest with a serpentine belt.

3rd gen has 2 belts, one controls the alt and water pump. The other controls the a/c and p/s so you could pull it off and be fine.

Why is there so much hate for the z? i mean come on, i love both personally, i own a 1st gen Z and it runs good....but why do you guys have to come down to "no, my car is faster" "NOO, my car is faster" why does it matter so much? ITs fun to get your car to go fast but when it comes down to being religious on having to beat someone else, and the fun is lost, well then whats the point? There is always going to be someone faster.

Well then you have to ask "whats the point of racing in the first place?" Obviously it is to compare which of the two cars that is racing, is the quicker one. Why would someone want there car to be quicker? For some it is for money and prizes and for some it is just for the "respect" that they receive in the "car" community along with a goal to shoot for when it comes down to the next race and for some it is to recieve the satisfaction of seeing your hard work pay off with bragging rights. So if you choose a RX-7 to upgrade and make faster don't you feel as if you are almost family (in a way) with other RX-7 enthusiasts? Don't you want to see an RX-7 do well against other types of cars? Don't you want your fellow RX-7 owner to win every race just like a sport fan wants his team to win every game? Of course there will always be someone faster but everything is relative... there might be a low 10 second 300zx that is around where this guy lives but he knows that this low 10 sec car is out of his league so he goes for the "It started for fun and now it getting ******* serious. The ZX guy is spending money like crazy just to prove that ZX's are better than our FD's." Did you forget that part? So obviously Panic7 is our RX-7 representative in the region where he lives, and now it will be his time to represent. So good luck to you Panic7 and I hope you KICK HIS ***!!!

First off, Why are you "drag" racing him. You really should take it to a track, or if that isnt cost effective just take him through some turns. Your car IS the turning car. You will kill his car through the corners.

Guys finally this race was never made. A few months later the 300ZX had a blown gearbox and then I had a blown engine.

Lucky for my the 100NOS never worked on this car but it made out an impressive 550 rwhp.

During a drag race event this 300ZX took part in the race with a best time of 12.5 due to but traction. I would like to remind everybody that I have posted a 12.09!!!

So who is the winner guys?

I love rotaries!!!!

traction plays a HUGE part in your ET. Who's mph was higher? Thats more than likely who would win from a kick...if i had to guess I'd say his mph is higher if he's making 550rw

Also...no one won, you didnt race lol

The race is close enough that if one of the drivers makes a small mistake, the race is over.

FD has the obvious weight advantage.
Has that Z32 been dyno-proven to make an honest 500???
I seen a kid walk into the local DynoJet bragging about some "Stage 4" set-up doing 400hp, but he quickly skulked away when the car only managed to hit 290.

Is this Z32 running upgrade turbos?
It if does, be careful.
If it's running stock turbos, you'll smoke him.

Is it running a big FMIC?
If it does, be careful.
If it doesn't, you should beat him.

I dunno how much this Z32 has been prepped for drag racing, but I heard the TCS and Super-HICAS makes it a royal pain to launch properly.
If he still has these things in the car, you should win.

Too bad the race didn't happen.
I think you would've beat him even with just 400 at the ground.

a supposed 550hp car only doing 12.5 is a joke, how bad of traction are we talking here?

I have a buddy with a 300zx trapping 116mph in the 1/4 with stock twins. It would take an FD with about 350-360rw to run with that. I agree that a FD with 400RWhp would smoke a stock turbo 300zx badly....but this guy is only making around 340rwhp with his mods and I just dont see him walking a 550rwhp 300z with that kind of power.....at least not from a kick. When you both launch traction comes into it and its going to be a lot harder to hook up a 550rwhp/gobs of tq 300zx than a 340rwhp 7 so from a dig its anyones game.

Damn, a year and a half later, lol. Typical really.....FD pops it's motor, Z destroys his tranny. Sometime stereotypes are true, I suppose

I'm a Z32 owner...I love both the FD and the Z32...I think that off the line the FD will take Z...but from a roll I think not. I've raced a few FDs around UC Irvine area...and took them... from a roll. Off the line...results would've been different.

Do not underestimate Zs with upgraded turbos...lots of torque and are pretty damn quick.

All in all there is always someone that will be faster than you...lets just enjoy what we got.
