STOCK TURBINE RX7 Vs 600+HP 300ZX
 

Guys i need your help. in a couple of weeks i have to race with a 500hp+100hp nitrous automatic Nissan 300ZX. It started for fun and now it getting fucking serious. The ZX guy is spending money like crazy just to prove that ZX's are better than our FD's. My car is a J-Spec 1999" and has everything needed to run high 11's to flat 12'. I am running a street ported engine, FMIC, fuel pump, aluminum radiator, HKS oil coolers, fully opened exhaust, non sequential turbines, air filters, Power FC, AVC-R etc. Estimated hp is about 400hp at the flywheel. I willl dyno the car next saturday. Now i am thinking of adding a 50-60 shot nitrous, 114 octane fuel, advance my timing through PFC in order to be able to kick his ass.

Any suggestions from you guys??? I don't want to humiliate the 7 for a 300ZX idiot. This race must be won!!!!

If he really has 600bhp with NOS and his auto tranny can handle it you are in touble. If he has sticky tires he should be in the low 11s and about 125mph in the 1/4 mile.

I was involved in a 300zx/RX7 shootout last year. A 600hp 300z isn't going to take you. They are pigs and the tranny's suck. I've never seen one faster than 12's. There is one thats running 10's on the IDRC circuit, but he has about $100k into the pig.

Personally I think you are underestimating the 300ZX a little bit ErnieT, Turbo with Targa 300ZX weighs about 3500lbs, about the same as a Toyota Supra Turbo. Both the cars are great cars, I think the 300ZX is greatly underestimated. Hiroshi Shiobara was running 7's with a 300ZX in Pro class summit sport compact, i think the RX7.com car beat him though every time, dont really remember. Dont ever remember seeing a supra competitive in the pro class... 400HP RX-7 vs a 600HP 300ZX and 600lb weight difference is no joke. Theres a bige difference in HP there... COuld be interesting. Im sure you know much more than I do though. My friend has one in the mid 11's with some weight reduction, spent about 15K or so (he claims...) I just want that 400hp rotary in my miata and then i will be running 15's still cuz i wont be able to keep the tires on the ground in any gear.... just two more months.... come on....

hey this is all about the 300z vs rx7! i use to own a 300zx 5spd turbo and i ran againts a couple rx7 some were turbos and some were n/a and not one beat me. most of the time it was stock for stock tho. but my 300zx owned

Man...400hp...My buddy is pushing 380hp, and said he ran a 12.2 with a little less hp, so I assume 400 will break you into the high 11's. Don't expect to win.

200hp is a lot of difference.

Dude man if you had I ZX twin turbo I'm glad that you could beat a N/A FC!!! if not you must be a really crappy driver or the zx sucks!!!! If you are taalking about beating turbo ones then I'm pretty sure you are not talking about FD's. BTW I'm from Winnipeg too, who are you???

Yo Panic7! Let's do the math here first to see if you can beat him mathmathically. 600HP divided by 3500 pounds(ZX) comes to .17HP per pound. Yours is 400HP divided by 2800 pounds is .14HP per pound. He got you beat by .03HP. It's all going to come down to reaction time and driving skills.

Lets not factor in gearing or Cd or the fact that its an automatic.

300ZXs can be fast cars. I used to own one. They are torque monsters and have very quick acceleration all the way to 5th gear. I can't talk trash about them... I love Nissan as much as I do Mazda. I wish you luck.

How to easily beat your associate
 

Here is what I do when someone says he is faster than me. Make him a deal, lets do race on the drag strip and take our fastest time. Next lets go to an autocross course and also race. Lets take our best time and add the two together. He with the lowest times win.

This is what I do to shut anybody up. Lets say you race some super modded beast from hell and he beats you by a second or so on the drag race. You have the ability to do much better than he on the autox course.

Sounds silly but should't we actually do this as a norm? Any great car should show good times on both courses right?

Yes I know about the role of the driver but this is about the car.

Our car was never meant to be a 1/4 mile demon, however we can kick but on the twisties. The 300 or supra suck in the twisties but they do much better in the straights.

So lets use a combo of both to determine which car is fastest.

We as a fourm should adopt this method of comparing cars.

ErnieT is right 300's are pigs!!! and no matter what you 300 fans have to say there is only one that is running in the 10's and a handfull running in the 11's. i raced one that made 530 rwhp on pump gas when i was making 380 and waxed his ass on a roll and from dead stop. granted over 150 mph FD's suck but up to that point we rule! a 600 h.p. brick with a weak drivetrain is not going to beat you unless you cannot drive. and PLEASE do not adv your timing, that is not the way to make safe h.p. you would be better off raising the boost and using race gas. also adding NOS to a FD on street tires will do nothing but spin even more! that slug is not going to run better than a mid 12 on a good day! FD's accelerate very well in street trim. use your AVC-R to raise your boost to around 18 in first gear,13 second gear and then raise it up to 16 the rest of the way. when you shift out of first do it a higher RPM than usual (around 8300) and shift FAST!! lower your shift point in the rest of the gears to 8k.

Marcus, why do you recommend turning the boost down so much in 2nd?

The 300zx is heavy but dont be fooled, they can make more power and torqe than the FD.And any FD with 400+HP will last as long as a bottle rocket, the 300zx is way more reliable.

don't underestimate the 300. The only reason not many people have gotten them that fast draggin is because they have major traction problems. Given the right slicks, it isn't that hard for a mildly modded 300ZXTT to run 11's. And having that much hp makes the 300 being an AT better. Ask any 300ZX owner that drag races, AT are faster after 400hp or so, not for being an AT but because how poorly the manuals shift

Take my 300ZX for example:D , it's an AT, and has nothing near 600hp, with slicks it ran 11.8.

I think if you really want to win this guy, take him off the line. FD's sweet spots are there launches. If you do it on a FWY roll, I would bet on the 300.

Get your head out your ass, my FD has over 500hp and is dead reliable.

My Z makes 622rwhp on stock motor with bolt-ons, no nitrous. Its been doing this for over a year now. I run it hard almost everytime I drive it.

Also check twinturbo.net, there are dozens of high mileage 500+rwhp Zs on stock motors...very very reliable.

Im happy for you. I too have a bone stock motor and run 10.7's @ 128mph......and have been doing so for over a year. All Im saying is the RX7 is just as reliable as anything else and can be faster with less effort becuase its not a titanic.

You have a fast car :). Would you say there are many people with fast fd's like yours?

More so than not. Its not hard. My best friend has a FD that runs 9's and shooting for the 8's. All it takes is fuel.........and some money...:p:
