Oil Burning

Have a recently rebuilt engine and it is burning oil at about the rate of 1 quart every 100 miles. When opening up the oil filler neck to put in oil, it stinks like gasoline as well. It's got a street port and single turbo (turbo has a 0.085" oil restrictor pellet and the turbo has been rebuilt as well and checks out with the builder after 200 miles, no shaft play, etc). The turbo oil dump feeds into the stock location and is a gentle bend going to the stock location that is 3/8" ID.

Compression was an average of 102 psi on each rotor after the build and is now about 120 psi on each rotor after 900 miles. Exhaust smoke color is blue and there is no difference between the volume of smoke generated between high - light vacuum or boost, it's all the same. There is also a catch can setup like a PVC off the oil filler neck.

EGT probes and O2 sensor looks chocolate brown and the spark plugs are black colored since it is running rich (base fuel/ign map).

The OMP has been capped off but when this is done, does the front cover need to be modified or can you just cap off the open area?

What else should I be investigating prior to having the engine come apart for inspection?

sounds like the motor was over ported. meaning the street port comes in to far in and interferes with the oil control rings path. and very possibly a stuck side seal as well.

how did you check the compression?

the omp can just be capped off, dont worry about that.

I had a very weird experience when using a catch can recently. I set up a catch can much like your describing, with no vent. Actually there was a vent but the tube was pinched. well within a few minutes of driving the car was smoking like a disco. I got out with the car still running and took the oil filler cap off. Within 30 seconds the car stopped smoking. I fixed the vent tube and it didn't happen again. The engine is an old used engine with about 95 PSI per face. It starts and runs very well though its getting tired. It is a 13b-re.

Try taking off the filler cap and going for a short drive.

We used a port from SR Motorsports, standard street port. From the ports I've seen it looked very comparable.

If it is the port and when you mean by too far, you mean too close to the center?

We checked compression with an analog factory rotary compression tester.

The catch can system does have a vent. We are using the stock nipple that is on the oil filler neck and the catch can has a vent tapped into it. On another note, it was smoking before we put the catch can system in but I didn't try it with the oil filler cap off.

I'll try starting it with no filler cap on and see what happens as I'm curious but I have to wait until it warms up again in a couple days.

yeah to close to the center. its possible the templet got screwed up or it moved while you were porting. dunno but moremazda's car had the same thing and it was over ported in his case. who knows though. did you use new rotors? new irons? what kinda condition where they in if they are used? do you have alot of oil in the catch can? or alot of oil shooting out of the breather?

All new housings, iron and rotors. The templates were exact replicas from another engine that was dissambled and functioning.

I don't have any oil in the catch can (there is no level in the catch can sight glass).

Can't say about the breather but the only place it could go is to the catch can.
