Max HP from stock GSL-SE intake

To all,
How much HP is the factory intake on a GSL-SE capable of making with a SP engine? I know that a '84-85 GSL-SE engine with a performance exhaust will make around 170hp with the factory intake. Is the same intake able to make more power with street porting or do you need to swap it out for a carb or aftermarket FI system to take advantage of the porting?

Thanks,

Peacedog

Well, depends on what condition the factory intake is in. I know a guy who runs a Sunbelt built 13B in his EProd car; it doesn't pull as well in the upper RPMs as the 12A/Weber IDA combo did (which made 235 horse at the flywheel, for reference) but he likes that the powerband's a lot broader.

... of course, Sunbelt cut it all apart, ported the hell out of it and rewelded it... and the motor's quite ported... and open exhaust... and Motec... etc.

Personally, unless you're racing in a class that requires the stock manifold, I'd go with something else.

It is easier to just bolt on the S4 intake and extend the wiring for the S4 intake, that is a easy 25hp, also i have heard that the S5 intake will fit if you just shave off that alum block on the rear rotor housing, and the S5 is suppost to give you a 30-40hp boost.

I havent done the S5 but i no the S4 works easy

Yeah, uh... have to kind of be skeptical about that. From the factory ratings, the S4 only made 11hp more than the GSL-SE... and the GSL-SE has, in anything, smaller ports. So where's the extra 14hp come from?

In fairness to the S4 manifold, there's nothing really wrong with the LIM that can't be fixed with devcon and grinding. The runners are fine too. And the UIM... makes a decent doorstop.
