Sounds like a good idea, except for the part where you use a BMW.

It would have to be a 3 rotor to make it worth getting rid of the BMW 6 cyl, even if it is an 'e' spec engine.

I dunno. The BMW engine is a perfect match for the rest of the car.

13b would be awsome in a E30 1050kg car, you'll loose a bit of weight from the motor but the gearboxes are very light, alot lighter than a S6 box, well atleast as far as I can remember from carying the bastards.

You cold realistically get the weight down to 1000kgs in the 2 doors. 13bt + 1000kg car=fun and I hope to have my E30 close to running by the end of the year (13bt conversion) But a 20B would be pretty cool. I wouldn't bother keeping the M20, M30 or M40 bmw engines when you could get a S14 M50 or M52... mmmmmmm

Any E30, except the M3, is a sluggish POS. But kudos for the project, I like oddities
And if you hack up an M3 to do the swap, I will personally hunt you down

Theres atleast three running rotor powered street E30s here in Australia that I know of two 13B one 20B. Also a few I know of in newzealand.

i built a S5 13bt powered E30 about 8 years ago. it was my daily driver for 2 years and tons of fun. with a BB T04S and 51 IDA blowthrough set-up the car was a blast to drive and even though i love my FD it's not half the fun the BMW was.

ill post pics of the car if someone can host for me

Don't those old BMW straight 6's have a 4500 rpm redline?

I'd take a stockport 12A over one of those (with boltons of course).

FARK YEAH! pp turbo bema BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP, massive idle. You must get alot of faces of disgust

what are you running in your rear end?

I can't wait to get my E30 running, stripped the interior, pos motor and box is out, roll cage, seats and harnesses in, should be doing the rear end in my car mid year.

Comon people pictures!

The "e" (efficiency) engines have low redlines. They still have more power than a stock 12A.

On the other hand, the chassis is heavy for what you get, the rear suspension is laughable and there's not much you can do about it, the front suspension sucks *** too, and the steering is so slow you might get arm joint problems just driving the thing from repetitive stress.

It's nothing that completely hulling the car out and replacing everything couldn't cure, which coincidentally enough is what BMW themselves did when they went racing....

Sounds crazy, any power figures or times yet? How have the driveshafts held up.

I'm trying to source a Z3 coupe rear end, nice big brakes, convert to 5 stud, but the driveshafts are alot beefier. If that fails I'll go for a E28 rear end which also have nice big drive shafts that look alot stronger than whats in the E30 rear end.

I agree. You need the extra torque in the low to mid range to make up for the extra chassis weight.

You can't be serious? considering they weight alot less than a FD~1260kg?

speedtkt: what was your MPH and 60fters? was that run on slicks? you should try a shorter diff ratios. Do you know what you are running at the moment? 3.73? 3.91?

if you already have the 325e, then i'd say pass on the rotary conversion idea. i'm with peejay - not ALL the way, because i happen to like the E30 chassis a lot, just not much love for the engines.

if you want to do a rotary BMW, i'd say the best bang for buck would be a 2002 (although i think it would be a shame) or an E21.

Which model 3 series are you talking about that weighs less than 3000 lbs? I never knew they got that light from the factory. 1260kg is only 2778lbs which is well within a base Fd's weight which is know where near "alot less".

While we are on the topic...how rediculous would it be if somone dropped a 13BT or something of the nature in a '71 2002....I've got a 2002 and a half: ready to re-assemble....and I'm looking for a project....

EDIT: Originally I always wanted to S14 it, but money is an issue. After driving a 533i for 2 years, I respect that M30. Would you guys suggest going M30 +turbo (it has 8:1 compression stock) or perhaps leaving that 180hp stock or going rotary? (id love to do something crazy but I don't have unlimited refunds)
