It is very loud. One registered at about 95 decibles from a sound meter roughly 20 feet away. They do sound VERY "tinney". It's a horrible muffler for an rx7.

I bought a stock car muffler that was about 30" long with 3" pipe in and out. The outside dia. was only 4". It was just a perferated pipe with 1/2" air space around it and no packing of any kind. IIRC it cost about $35. I cut the outside 4" pipe off of it and used the perferated pipe as the basis for the new muffler. I made end plates to fit the 3" pipe on the inside and about 6" on the outside. Then cut a piece of steel to form the body and rolled it by hammering it around a piece of pipe I had laying around the shop. I put the end plate on the 3" pipe and then the body(6" tube) onto that. I bought a bag of lava rock at Homey's Depot/Race Supply store. I had to break some of the pieces to fit into the 1 1/2" gap between the pipes. I welded the other end cap on after making sure the lava rock was packed pretty well. And your done! Total cost about $50 and it really doesn't weight that much, about the same as the Spintech we ripped off the car.
The exhaust was off the car as of yesterday, if its still off I can get a picture of the ugly thing today. With better materials it could be a good looking muffler for the street but mine was made with junk off the scrap pile. It lives under a racecar so I wasn't to worried about how it looked. It also just gets the car under the 103db limit for SCCA, like 100-102! Not a good street muffler.

So, basically, just buy any old ebay muffler, cut off the outside tube so you have the perforated interior tube, make a new larger outside tube and some endcaps, fill it full of lava rock around the inner tube, and bam, new muffler? Some pics would really be appreciated.

That's a neat idea. I wonder who came up with that...
OK, here's what we're gonna do. Let's fill up this old muffler with a bunch of gravel, weld it all together, and slap it on the car. All right, fire it up! Hooeee! Damn, that worked well! lol
