Definition of Tubbed/Untubbed

What's the difference? What do the two mean? I see the phrase every so often referring to drag racing.

Untubbed means it has the stock wheelwells.

Tubbed means the stock wheelwells were cut out and enlarged, to make room for larger tires.

On solid axle cars, the axle housing is narrowed as well. Pro-Street cars typically have HUGE tubs put in and seriously narrowed axles to make room for those 33x22.5x15 (33" tall, 22.5" wide, 15" rim) Mickey T's But a lot of times people will cut and section the factory tubs inwards a few inches, just enough room for wider tires while still allowing the use of the rear seats.

I haven't heard of any tubbed IRS cars, probably because the suspension gets in the way before the stock tubs do, but I'm sure that now that I've said this somebody will cite examples proving I'm wrong, thereby enlightening us all
