to 5.0 or not to 5.0, that is the ?

this has been on my mind FOREVER! well not really, more like a couple of weeks, but the story is this, i have a '88 with a bad motor. motor was bad when i bought it, i planned on taking the motor out and getting a large street ported rebuild and putting it back, and mod'ing it from there. the car already has intake, exhaust, FCD, jacobs ignition, and some other things. I contacted a well known engine builder and i told him my situation. he told me that i should just go ahead and buy a j-spec, mod it and street port at a later time. Well that really burst my bubble cause i wanted to have a fast *** 7, somethin to the song of +500 rwhp, yet dependable so that it can be a daily driver and i live in dallas, so we have some very hot summers that could pose a threat. but there was a thread on here not to long ago talkin about mustangs. I read it and found that link to TDC, and i looked at there kits. i was amazed at the power achievable at a cheap price. i personally dont see how any mazda can get +700 rwhp for around $5k. those were the figures for a 5.0. and this is really the reason why i'm thinkin about putting that motor in cause, well, i can get the motor and transmission for free, so i figured why not? i dont mean to **** anyone off, but i'm 19 and not made of money, so i'm lookin for a cheap way to go fast. and i dont want a mustang cause they're just FUGLY. So, what do yall guys think? yall gonna dispise someone for doin that?

It's nothing new to put a high HP motor into a light *** car. heck no one wants a to race a 100 ton steel brick. well some do, but that's not the point.+500 RWHP for 5K .???? Yeah i've been to their web site and it sounds too good to be true. You say that you can get a motor and tranny for free. The motors they sell are far from stock my friend. they actually have quiet a bit of work to them. it'll never handle the same. But if that's not what you were after then why did you get a seven in the 1st place. I've seen cars with similar swaps and the amount of gremlins that come out of a project like that are quiet a few. You say, you don't have a lot of money.....I guarantee that the 5K that you'll spend is just the beginning. I've thought about similar swaps. But definitely not when i need that vehicle to be my daily driver. it's possible. Do more homework..talk to several people that have been down that road. See if they would recommend this for your budget, and method of transportation. Good luck.

no no, i love rotaries, dont get me wrong, i had plan's for it, but plans change, especially when you have to be practicle about what you do. I would rather have a rotary, no doubt, but i cant fit one in on my budget. Parts are cheaper for a ford and they're also more common.

the main thing that bothers me, is all the little sensors and vacuum line BS. if i were to put a j-spec motor back in, is there ways to get rid of alot of them to make it more simple and easier to work on?? would a stand alone cut down on alot of the wires? i've already pretty much disconnected all the hoses and electrical connections that go to the motor and didnt pay a whole lot of attention to how it goes back together, i hope i havent totally just fucked anything up but i wanted to do this MYSELF so i could learn. is there any more advice anyone would like to share?

Dude all you need with a standalone ECU such as a Haltech is

fuel injectors
map sensor
o2 sensor (if you want it)
air temp sensor
coolant temp sensor
TPS

Everything else goes to the garbage can

And thats it, 'cept for the turbo associated things, but if you single then you already know them

I attached a pic of the crap you jerk off

With a Haltech you make your own wiring harness.

I would, personally I plan on using a wideband o2 and a 3 bar MAP.

As Felix said you make your own wiring harness, I plan on using 6-10 inches of the stock connectors... SOLDERING and heat shrinking every connection, loomed in split loom and wire tied up.

so could anyone do me a favor and list the things i should salvage instead of the things i should **** can. i figure there's more gettin thrown away than i'm gonna be using. i already pulled the motor out and took off the power steering pump, turbo w/manifold, upper and lower intake manifolds, all vacuums, fuel rails, fuel injectors, nothin left on the stand but the motor and the flywheel. Is there anything i could take that friggin' nut off with besides that "special" tool??
