4 rotor engine

Why did the 4 rotor engine, in Le mans have 3 spark plugs, and if there is an advantage to that, why don't the 13b's have it.

Well the reason that the 13bs have 2 is to more completely combust the air/fuel mixture thats spread out across the rotor face. So I'd guess if 2 are better than 1, than 3 are better than 2.

I don't know how they were arranged, but I'd assume they were inline, like our 2 are?

How come the GM rotary engines only had 1?

probably has something to do with the same reason they dont produce it.

well, try unplugging your trailing coils and running that way. . .

the advantage is that it combusts the intake charge even better. Reason its not on our cars is probably the cost of producing the new housings, and electronics to control it. Not to mention the R&D hours that went into timing that 3rd plug on each rotor

The 'late trailing' plug increased gas mileage, but that is all. Or did it not affect gas mileage and instead increased torque? The compression loss caused one or the other. I can't remember which it was.

All three plugs fired at the same time; it probably didn't take very long to research it. If it were up to me, I'd have sparked the leading plugs again at 180º just so each rotor would get four sparks per face instead of only three.

OK kids the real reson for two spark plugs. Need to think of the rotor as a teeter todder, the leading is on the down side lites off just ofther TDC and that pushes the teeter down smothe action, but the flame front is heading towards the trailing real fast (so if your where running towards a wall real fast and that wall was moving towards you real fast, do I need to say more) So the trailng lites off just a little later then the leading and this ignites the gas and this acts like a cushen when the leading flame front hits it and not hitting the rear of the rotor, So does that help, or unhook your trailing get on it real hard and you should be able to hear what is called wild ping

Uhmm... wouldn't that be detonation?

I've driven with no trailing for a couple hundred miles boosting fine and I didn't hear pinging.

No, detonation is when something other then the spark ignites the fuel, hot spot, wrong kind of additives, higher then normale comperssion. Wild Ping is where that flame front slames into something, like the end of a hall way that is blocked off. If you play with it you can get ther

I hooked up a switch in my trailing circuit to turn it on and off while driving in all kinds of conditions. I never noticed any ping at all. Of course my leading ignition was setup for direct fire with two sparks per rotor face.
