“A Study of Automotive Gear Lubes”

A study of Automotive Gear Lubes conducted by the Amsoil lubricants.

http://www.amsoil.com/products/gearl...hitePaper.aspx

Pretty intersting results from some of the leading manufactures of gear lube.

Opinions on different types of premix lubes

http://www.go-cl.se/castor.html

http://www.foxvalleykart.com/oil1.html

I've always been bias to castor based lubricants mainly for high performance and extreme levels of operation but synthetics do offer some positive results also.

It's called the power of advertising.
The messed up part is that most of the people in racing that I know of found that out the hard way.
I was also one that believed the hype untill I saw the actual results.
One thing for sure is that you will go faster and make more power with it but how long the components last is another story.

AMS oil always does best under the standard oil tests. Those tests check only wear under normal operating conditions, effects of cold starts and oil longevity (resistance to breakdown under normal conditions, sludge removing detergents, etc.). All of that basically translates to "AMS oil lasts longer and causes less wear under normal driving." When they tell you that their motor oil + filter lasts 25,000 miles/1 year, they're probably right. Performance driving is a completely different issue.

I have a friend who spends half his time above 4k rpms so he's always ready for immediate take-off. Then he changes his gear oil and notices how it shifts like new again. I'm just thinking, geeze Mobil 1 is nice stuff but he really needs a race oil to withstand his driving. Same with AMS, I'd bet.

Why is that going to be such a surprise? That's straight off of Amsoil's own website. I have no doubt that anything RP puts out will end up working in their favor. Would Amsoil (or anyone else) really publish anything that didn't portray their product as the best?

So what's the best engine oil for a rotary running premix. In other words, no omp- Mobil one? Royal purple? ETC

this is a gear lube, for engine look up Idemitsu oil:

http://www.idemitsu-usa.com/

They have a special blend for just tossing in the engine and another just for premix.

It's not so much the brand but the type of oil used.

Depends on the application but for race/highly stress applications, 'castor' is my choice. For a daily driver who wants some added protection then is difficult to argue the benefits of an actual true synthetic oil for premix.

Anything said between Christmas and New Years is excusable base on the fact that they might be under the influence of ethanol poisoning. Moonshine for the win!!!

I have been running castrol 20-50 with my omp blocked off and premix either amsoil or royal purple 2 stroke oil to about 1 ounce per gallon which is pretty close to 100 to 1. How does this sound?

That's very interesting. Thanks for posting. How does this effect a rotary engine though? It seems they are basing these examples with cams, lifters, and valves and since rotaries don't have these high friction parts then I don't see how this oil would effect us. Especially those like me who premix.
