the 8 is more for the yuppie guy who wants a sports car, but has a family, so he has to compromise.

either that, or for 18 year olds who want a sports car, but their parents wont let them get a pure breed sports car, so they end up settling for the 8.
agree with all points-

My story is closer to the truth than any of the BS posted by the above.
Far as I'm concerned the rx8 is the superior car and is known so in the engineering world. Any Rotary mechanic will agree the 8 is the best rotary pkg yet. The build quality is superb.

You've all been very nice, except for some who have proven their primative mentalities on this forum. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

RXCITED has left the building. :

the the yuppie thing hurt.

Its the best compromise between sports car and family. For some of us, its just a reality that we can't have a two seater.

RXCITED is such a tool. Oh...and for the record I had to have my engine replaced on my RX8 witin 2 months of owning it....so get off your high horse.

Again, tools like this are not the norm with us RX8 guys.

I love all the creative metaphors rolling around in this thread.

^^ No need for the inferiority complex RXCITED, relax. Who said 7 owners didn't like 8's?

wow, so much fighting..when I was a probe guy, we didn't get on the case of the cougar guys cause they had a "newed model" so to speak of our cars..we just smoked them and called it a day.

nextly, I don't see how this 8 owner can call the 7 a primative car, theres something to be said about the technology behind sequential twin turbos..mitsubishi couldn't do it with the 3000 or the stealth, nissan couldn't do it with the 300...

And 7 guys, don't be so afraid of the new style of cars..don't be surprised if there comes a time when the govenment bans gas guzzlers =D

but everyone, quit your bickering at the end of the day, they are all Rex's parked in your driveway, and hell..if you don't like it I'll happily take it from you, I men I haven't bought mine yet, but what the hell, if you want to give me one...

edit: fix typos

not in the power department...at least not yet. You can however compare handling and braking.

first off not fighting, but speaking here-

if you want a family car i'd get an accord I think its funny many 7 guys call the 8 a family car just cause it has a backseat and 2 suicide doors. Would you call the M3 a family car? Well the rx8 can get similar lap times. *See Top Gear*. Its still a quick little gran tourer, some call it a sports Car. Car and Driver this past year as its best sports car under 40K and Ten Bester 2 years in a row. I don't think its as PURE sports car as the FD, nor do I hope thats the impression you get of what Im saying. But to call it a family car? I would disagree.

More on the similarities. The 8 can pull .88-.9 on the skidpad, and brakes from 70 in about 144 feet, high marks in both categories and close to the stock FD.

Its a rotary RX, by MAZDA, who has rethought its goals of its rotary rx car to make it more marketble. Thats the 8. You can compare the two simply by saying that Mazda has kept as much of its rooted RX genes that gave us the 7 in the 8, and taken some of it out (turbos, power), to allow for some new things like a small, but somewhat usable back seat. But its still a small, lightweight, fast good handling car thats lots of fun, on road and on track.

That to me is similar. the Rotary makes it way similar. Definitely not as different as you said earlier a civic and an nsx are. Car and Driver just did along term test on the 8, in the article, all they do is compare it to the previous 7. Other people are making the comparisons, so its hard to just all across the board, as you are, say you 'can't compare the two'.

I don't have the stats handy for an FD but my point being for a 4 door family car as the RX8 has been described it brakes quite well. It also handles very well and can be made to handle even better with small upgrades...

Braking from 60 mph, ft (Road and Track)

RX8 - 110
Porsche Boxter - 113
Porsche Carrara GT - 124
BMW M3 SMG - 112

Not bad for a family car. You also get the benifits from having that compact rotary that it can sit further down and back to help the handling characteristics.

Power - well not yet. Not even with a turbo. I'd like to see a nice super-charger for the RX8. I think that would work better.

My wife and I own RX8 and RX7s. I love the RX8 for what it is. I think RX7 owners should back up 8 owners, and avenge them if they get beat in a race. I did it last time at Moroso. There was a nice guy who ran a 15.2 and lost to an S2000. I beat the crap out of the S2000 time after time. The 8 is not the next 7. It is better than it in many ways. It is faster and more powerful than any non-turbo RX7 from factory, and handles better than an FD. It is also reliable, with a 4 star safety rating and 8 air bags. Seats 4 pretty comfortably, and looks incredible in my opinion, with the exterior dimensions of a Porsche. Please respect, help and educate RX8 owners, as the stupidity of some owners does not reflect the quality of the car. The RX8 is winning many many big awards and races, making the rotary (and the RX7 as a result) look good.

Im not gonna talk **** about either. I love my FC, I have been next to a couple 8's and smoked them, and Im not turbo'd, I think its a cool family car, my mom wants one, but i think they are ugly, hopefully a lot of performance companies come out with stuff to make them a little quicker and continue to show that rotaries are where its at

An RX-8 will not handle better than an FD, especially an R1. R1's pulled 1.01G on the skidpad in stock format. No RX-8 has approximated my R1 (or any other near stock RX-7 at our local autocross) in the handling category. Now, a Z06, you bet.

RX-8s have a firm chassis & good balance but they have a higher center of gravity, weigh a bit more, and can't hang with an FD at its adhesion limit.

I don’t think anyone was talking special editions and I don't think we said that it would beat FD's specifically. The question was do they compare....hp?... no, handling....yes they can with certain exceptions.....braking?...yes

Other than RXCITED I think most RX8 owners now what their car is about and where it fits in the rotary hierarchy. I think that the discussion was directed to RX7's in general. It has been the RX7 crowd that always drills it down to the FD...or in this case, a special one at that.

The RX8 isn't a bad performing car. Its purpose/goal was not the same as the FD nor was the automotive climate. The FD was developed when the Japanese manufacturers were all trying to out do each other. That clearly isn't the case right now. The FD had a very narrow target consumer; with the RX8 they are trying to broaden that.

Sometime soon someone will figure out a way to successfully crack the CPU on the RX8 and you will see the power potential rise for this car. There are already kits out there to improve the handling significantly. The brakes are fine as it.....it stops great, straight and with no fade.

Each RX....1st, 2nd, 3rd and 8 have their own characteristics that separate them from each other and what makes people like them so much. To keep having the argument that the RX8 is no FD is like saying the 1st gen is no FD...they are just different cars in the same family.....and still the only ones with NO PISTONS!!

It's all good man.
Is your FC stock?

They are hardly ugly in my opinion. But you're entitled to yours.

Err no, READ his post. He said the RX-8 outhandles an FD, SPECIFICALLY.

Furthermore, an R1 was not a "special edition". WTF is that all about? There was 1) A Base Model, 2) A Touring Model, & 3) An R1. Thus, there were 3 options for the consumer. "Special Edition"?....far from it.

RXCITED doesn't count....he's is obviously a tool. Sorry, my bad, wrong terminology, we are talking option levels. I could be wrong but I don't remember any (stock) base FD's pulling 1g.

Getting back to my previous post....its not about which one is better...its about appreciating each car for what they are and do well..........within the rotary family.

Judging either of the cars handling ability by their skidpad is pointless anyway. Too much of that number is dependent on tires, and tire technology has improved quite a bit since the early 90s. Both have an excellent suspension and chassis, but the FDs lower end torque, gearing and greater powerband will enable it to work its way off the apex quicker than an 8. In general the 8 is without a doubt a car that caters to a broader daily driven consumer, while the 7 is an "all out" attempt at a sports car.

Simply put, the 8 is breaching territory the 7 never would have been able to touch, and thats why Mazda (fully knowledgeble of what they were designing) built it. If Mazda wanted to build another RX-7 that would eclipse the FD, they could have done it...lets not insult the engineers and act as if they failed at reproducing a 7. The name isn't dead, but Mazda once made the mistake of releasing an amazing car at a time when the world (or US at least) wasn't interested in sports performance. The 8 is here to; a.) test waters for rotary technology, b.) pave a path so we may once again recieve the 7, and c.) push rotaries into a better market perception thats far broader than the one before.
